Looking for opinions on a seat upgrade for my 2010 ultra. Bike was manufactured Jan. 2010, I thought I had the newer seat,I checked it doesn't. Is it worth going to the lower upgraded seat 52164-10 ?, or do I need something aftermarket? Weird thing is I've been doing about 250 miles on two lanes in 7-8 hr rides, and no issues, considered it a comfy seat, lately I'm done at 100 miles, and 2 hours.
Windshields, seats, etc. if there was one solution for everyone HD would lose a lot of aftermarket sales! Here's what I've found that works for me. On my recent Sturgis trip I did 4000 miles in 12 days on my 2012 Streetglide sitting on a signature solo saddle #51700-09 with the backrest. (Good price from LSHD)
I could ride comfortably for a full gas tank's worth of miles. At each stop I usually would have a cold tea and an energy bar, walk around a little and head on down the road. My farthest day was 525 miles. No complaints.
I've found that the backrest has been a key factor for me in getting comfortable for the long haul.
This may not help you, but i was looking around for a new seat too. Then i bought Howards shocks and the seat is on hold now. Ride quality is so much better now that my *** isnt complaining anymore. Rode 17 hours on my second day, (11 on first day) riding back home from sturgis...my eyes where starting to cross but my *** was ok
There are many ways of sorting out comfort, but as Pete says, proper quality shocks will give the biggest benefit. We have Howard's custom-built Ohlins and get the same benefits - a dramatically more comfortable ride.
Other improvements can be had with a change of tyres, to a more compliant aftermarket set, which will enhance ride quality further. As for your seat, a shift in riding stance can also help, especially if you are sitting very upright, with your weight straight down your spine. Try to adjust your bars or position so you lean a little forward, taking some of your weight under your thighs.
my stock SG seat does just fine for me and I've done over 800 miles in a day
of course, I did send it to Mean City Cycles to get their touch!
my suggestion would be to send it to them and see if that works for you as it has many others on this forum, it's way less than new seats run and keeps the stock look
I bought a new C&C seat they put out a pretty good product. The guy I talked to was very helpful, he said I needed a stiffer seat. HUH I said!.. He was right. I had an OEM SG seat and replaced it with a new "memory-foam" C&C. What a difference. !! DO it!
