So.

I posted about a transmission leak on my 99 Road King.
- Transmission drive pulley nut came loose and the main (5th) gear ended-up farther into the transmission than it should have been...replaced the bearing, seals, and went with Andrews Performance main/countershaft gears.

While I had everything apart, I decided to swap to an Andrews 30-tooth drive pulley (stock is 32-tooth). I also had some concern about the drive belt (since it had been soaked in fluid), so I swapped it also. At the recommendation of Andrews Performance, BDL and a local custom shop...I grabbed a 136-tooth belt...as a 137-tooth/1.5" belt is not offered from any of the 'big' belt companies.

Well, the 136-tooth is too short. I'm unable to re-install the rear axle. It's too far forward by about 1/2 the diameter of the axle. So...I can either pull the swing arm again and go back to my original belt (which I believe will be too long)...or grab the Dremmel and grind away about 1/2" of the axle slot in the swing arm.

Thoughts?

I am going to do the opposite, going up 2 teeth to reduce highway rpm's, do you know how many rpm's you will be doing on the highway, most guys I know that have done what you are doing change back. You also can do what you are trying to do easier by changing the compensating sprocket, is easier to do and easier to change back, also changing the compensating sprocket will not change your spedo reading. I am going up 2 teeth on my compensating sprocket but you can go down as well, only have to take off the outer primary.

I'm running a BDL open belt primary drive.

I don't have a tach on the Road King, but my revs are WaY too low at highway cruising speeds. I ended-up running in 4th gear a lot.

Do not grind a larger slot in your swingarm. I cannot see how that will ever come out well. If you have to, put back on an original equipment belt, but a new one that isn't oil soaked. I believe it will fit OK as others have changed out that pulley before and I don't remember the belt size being an issue.
