Default need help picking new carb.

Hi guys. I just got a new bike. It's a 99 road king classic. The guy that had it before me had an edlebrock carb on it. I'm pretty sure I need to trash this asap. I'm trying to decide if I should go back to stock or if I should upgrade to a Mikuni. I have 2 friends in town telling me 2 different things. UFO should get the mikuni, can I buy the easy Kit, or do I need the full Kit, and what size? And if yall think I should just save my cash for other upgrades, can you tell me which exact stock carb I should be searching Ebay, or elsewhere for. I'mfairly new to this, other than mounting up and riding. Thanks!

S&s super E. Get the full kit. I've known several guys with this kit and it works well.

Really depends what ya want? Stock CV carb works pretty well if ya are leaving motor pretty stock. If ya are going for all out performance an S&S is a good choice. I'm a big Mikuni fan myself. Great carb! Size will depend on engine mods. Get the full kit.

Honestly all i really plan on doing is changing out this carb, maybe doing Adifferent air cleaner, and pipes. Everything else will be cosmetic. Bars, bags, Ect. Nothing super extreme for this bike, unless you guys have a "you really have to do this" suggestion

The Keihin CV carb ( stock 1990~2006) is self compensating for changes in air density, whether due to altitude or temperature.

The design makes a little less responsive to the throttle than a mikuni or S&S---BUT you can go to Denver and not have to rejet your carb.

I love the CV ( Constant Velocity), and have had just great results. I live at 1200' and often ride up to over 8000' ( Flagstaff is way up high) and the carb works great at even higher elevations.

inexpensive and easy to tune.
( I used to buy for $60 at swaps and rebuild and tune)

should be able to get over 40 MPG at 65 MPH cruising - my '95 Evo FLHTC was dead on 45 MPG and 65 MPH

The model you would want is the Keihin CVK40, the H-D part number would be 27412-99
that part number is 99 RK specific in the jetting from the factory, but the jets and needles are easily changed if you can't find 27412-99
Similar models were used by Triumph and Kawasaki- the H-D version has the Bar and Shield logo cast into the side.

nightrider.com has carb tuning info in the bike tech section, which you may find interesting to read

here's a link to a diagram and part numbers courtesy of Ronnies partsfinder

http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche....RETOR-ASSEMBLY

the thing to look for in a cv carb ( or any) is that it has not been monkeyed with by previous owner.
the first thing they do would be to drill out the plug over the idle mixture adjustment on the bottom- while that does not indicate a screwed up carb, it would indicate a virgin

The edelbrock/qwiksilver did alot of advertising in the mid 90's...never seemed to live up to the hype

S&S and Mikuni have good throttle response and advertising budgets, but I have seen many a "powerful" bike, fall flat when we went into the hills.

in terms of you really gotta do...:
The 99 model had real problems with the cam drive and cam bearing failing- make sure this has been addressed- if that stuff lets go, you'd be up for a complete rebuild.
weak ignition switch- DO NOT- overload the switch with extra high watt headlight bulbs
the bracket for the tip-over switch is also weak on those and can break, causing the bike to shut down while riding ( the flopping switch makes the bike think it fell over)

Stock CV is easier to jet and adjust than the S&S Super's but once adjusted the S&S is also a good carb

Mikuni for sure if you have to buy the carb anyway. Easy to work on, adjust idle with your fingers. You might need an adapter for the intake manifold. They are $12 or so.

All of the above. If you plan on a cam(which I wouldnt ride a evo without a hotter one) I would go S@S.If you are all about tuning and want to have a box of stuff to carry to keep it running right go with a mikuni.I thought the quicksilver was just a variation of the mikuni myself. If you ever get a mikuni dialed in perfect and it stays you will love it.Mine on my evo needs to have a weather station built in for tuning. Its so finicky I have thought about going back to my super e but the new fuel inj bike gets most of the time now anyway

The above comments show the inevitability of asking advice - I think we have covered every brand of carb available! I had an Edelbrock some years ago and despite having it professionally tuned agree that it is best binned! Of the options mentioned IMHO the c/v will do just fine, for all the reasons mentioned, although I do currently have an S&S (it came on engine of the same name!) and have been over The Alps with it.
