That's good info...knowing the markup from invoice and all.
The $5,000 markup was only on the various versions of the Electra Glides (Classic, Ultra, and Limited). He said markup on the 883 Sportster for instance was less than $1,000. so it varies by model. Dealers don't want to discount the new ones and give inflated trade values for a couple of reasons. The obvious is profit. But it also helps maintain brand value. If they give inflated trade in values it props up the value of used Harley's. It also helps them to sell you a new one every couple of years. If you go back to a dealer when your trade is on the lot for sale it is probably priced close to or even less than they say they gave you for it. Who would by a used 1 or 2 year old bike when they can get a new one for a little more. They did raise the MSRP on the 2014 Limited's quit a bit over the 2013's. But they added a lot of features that drove the cost up.
I just talked to the dealer on trade on my '09 with many many upgrades even a 107" big bore. Looking at a vivid black '14 Limited. Bottom line, I would not give them my bike for what they are offering. I will sell it outright. I also have to find a dealer that has demo days because the dealer by me doesn't have one to take for a ride.
I'm actually considering trading the 2011 RKC I got in July for a 2013 SG, I'm not interested in the 2014s, hopefully dealers will be more willing to deal the 2013s with the 2014s being on the same floor.
Rode the first 14 limited my dealer got in- loved the bike, didn't love the trade in offer on my 13 limited. He offered $19,633 with 6500 miles on it. I still have my 13 and he still has the 14. I've read here where guys are getting 21-22 for their 12 & 13 trades.
And you believe everything you read?
I call bs on 22k in trade. 19.6k is a fair offer. I don't see anyone paying 22k for a 14 with 6500 on it. I sure as hell wouldn't. You can get a new 13 for not much more.
Good for you! What you getting? I'd like to get a cvo for a second bike and hopefully leave it stock except for the bars. Been thinking about maybe even a bmw r1200rt. Idk. That all black 90th addition is really digging at me.

Dealers (car & Motorcycle) can't give you much extra for the things you add. Banks go by NADA value or another similar source to determine what they will loan. The NADA value doesn't go up for your cam, tuner, pipes, custom paint, seats..... So If a dealer gave you what your mods cost they wouldn't be able to get a buyer financed unless they have a huge down payment to bring the loan amount down to what the bank will loan. It would make it hard to sale. The same applies to selling it yourself. You will be able to get more. But the bank still won't loan more than NADA says it's worth. Most banks will only loan 80-90% of retail so that has to be considered also when trying to determine what to sale your bike for. Best scenario, you sell it yourself and find a cash buyer.
First of all, I dont know how anyone breaks even if they get what the OWE. I own nothing on my bike but I sure as hell am not going to trade for what I owe.
I am sure there will be a few more threads pop up from folks who got "smokin deals" on their new bikes. Most will be financed. I can tell you WHO got the smokin deals! LOL!
IMO the dealer have to make some money. Thats what they do. I think we all worry about if they next guy got a better deal then we did. At the end of the day I made a deal I can live with and rode off on a 14 street glide. From here on I said to myself not going to worry who got a better deal then me or if I got a better deal than some one else.
