Default Two changes in 2014 service manual we all need!

Here are the two images. One is a 2011 service manual the other is the 2014 service manual. https://i.imgur.com/eWTFLIf.jpg and https://i.imgur.com/jwMXm6Z.jpg.

In case it doesn't stand out, in 2011 they recommended filling 3.5 quarts in the engine and 32oz in the transmission. In 2014 they recommend 3.0 quarts in the engine and 28oz in the transmission. They did not change the primary. And the total capacities are the same between 2011/2014 so thats not the reason.

I had already been using 3 quarts in my 2011 because I noticed too much blow-by. This makes more sense.

things change...

some 2014 models DO NOT have oil coolers- so maybe less system capacity.

when I read over page 1;

"initially add 3.0 quarts..."

then it says to verify level...then cold check and hot check

so likely 3.0 quarts + whatever needed to reach levels on dipstick

When I read over the 2nd page;

it says to add 28 OZ...then CHECK THE LEVEL on the dipstick and fill to line.

so 28 oz +

the previous paragraph puts the capacity at approx 32 oz

I have had no blowby problems on my head breathers. SE on the '95, Ness BS on the '09

Of course check your levels. Its much easier to add more than to take out. The old service manual doesn't give you room for error and likely has us exceeding capacity on the transmission.

My 11 RKC takes about 3.5 quarts engine oil with no blow by what so ever. The transmission takes about 38 oz to bring it to correct level.

I just keep my oil level right in the middle of the dipstick range and have no problems.

To clarify the transmission oil differences, On the 2014 models the transmission oil level is checked by screwing the dipstick in until the o-ring touches the case which will result in a lower oil level in the transmission. Prior to the '14s you did not screw the dipstick in, you just put it on top of the case and then checked the level. This should account for the 14's requiring a little less transmission lubricant.

My 2012 manual says the same thing, add 3.0 qts and check to the engine and add 28 oz and check to the tranny.

As any FYI my tranny took 32 oz to fill to the >I< and 3.0 qts and a few oz,s in the new oil filter before installing put me just slightly under full and where I run it.

There should never be a reason to add 38oz to your tranny. The specs are 32oz at most. The only thing I can imagine is you are checking the level incorrectly and overfilling to compensate.

Hmm. But its the same transmission with the same capacity. So maybe the older models had the wrong instructions for checking OR they shortened the dip stick.
