Default wrapping the cat

anyone ever try wrapping the cat converter with that pipe wrap they sell ? friend of mine just bought a left over 13 and can't stand the heat, but has the extended warrenty and doesn't want to fool with it. i told him i removed my cat, warrenty or not. just wondering if anyone has tried this. don't want to melt down the converter.

I've never seen anyone ask this question either. Would like to know if there would be a problem.

The excessive heat due to the wrap not allowing it to radiate/convect away will result in metal fatigue and, possibly, breakage at a later date. The wrap also tends to hold in moisture.

Just my opinion, but I would bet that wrapping the pipes would also void the warranty. I don't know that to be fact, but just seems like something they would put in their weasel clause of the warranty.

+1 on removing the cat. Cutting the "window" and rewelding it is the way to go.

Tell your friend, to go on E-bay and buy a set of de-catted pipes, and keep his stock ones for just in case he needs to go back to the cats for any reason.

I got a set of catless pipes, tig welded back together with stainless rod on E-bay for $135 shipping included. Took me about 1 1/2 hours to change them out..... and that was taking my time.

we were not talking about wrapping the entire pipe ,just the cat. i think the pipe is stainless where the cat is located,so heat shouldn't be an issue. i was wonder about melting the cat. i drilled my cat out and it worked very well, clean as can be, nothing left inside.

A guy that works at my dealer has his pipes wrapped and says it works great. I see a lot of riders wrapping their pipes. I would like to do it to mine if it didn't look so ugly.

You can put your heat shields on top of the wrap, if you do a nice clean job and don't get it to thick. You can even get the wrap in a few different colors so it doesn't stand out in the bare spots so bad.

I wrapped my stock '09 non-cat header and didn't think it helped much but it was also a light wrap. I did a proper wrap on the Fullsack header I recently installed and there is almost no exhaust heat. The sheilds fit fine with wrap. Converters are designed to run hot, they don't melt.
