Thanks for all the replies. I have known Dan for close to 15 years> I recall when he got the Ultra and I am aware of how all the war wounds got there. Dan is 5'-nothing....Short legs and he dropped it a couple of times in parking lots. He's selling cause he's nearing 60 years old and about 4 years ago had an industrial accident at work so between the injuries he sustained and his age he cant manage the big bike any longer.
The puck on the tour pack is the GPS antennae(its a dated GPS). Dan posted a Craigslist ad for $8500 so I know thats what he'll sell to anyone. My gut says $7500 is a good number for me however I would hate to low ball him. I also think $8000 is a little more than where I want to be. $8500 I'd probably let it pass.
your gut sounds right. That's what I paid for mine, and still about $700 on changing stuff to make it 'mine'. The 88" is a great runner, with a SE a/c,SE 203 cams, and Vance & Hines monster ovals.
I agree with "nchogfan" on the cam chain tension system,it could be a concern , a minor one but concern none the less . Personally I think it's a good idea to replace your oil pump at the same time , you can get pieces of the chain tension shoes in the pump . Seen it happen before! Better to be safe then sorry.
IF you're leaning on a new one, Don't buy one with the liquid cooling right now...wait until 2015. There's 3 or 4 people on this forum with their bikes puking antifreeze after a ride. One of which had the bike bought back by Harley..
Yea he's right. 3 or 4 bikes puking antifreeze out of all those bikes that they sold show that all the new bikes are junk. And dont believe any of those new bike owners here that say they love their bikes, they're just trying to get you to buy one so that you can be as miserable as they are. Wait for the '15 bikes to come out, Harley should have it down to 1 or 2 bikes puking antifreeze by then.
I have a 2003 Heritage Classic that I have put 22,000 trouble free miles on it. Have done regular maintenance. As posted previously and as far as I know on the TC88, the cam chain tension system needs to be checked.

I had a 2003 Ultra when new, and off the top of my head, I think it was the only Harley that never gave me any problems.
Since you already know what his 'asking' price is on Craig's List, it's easy to just ask the simple question... 'so Dan, what do you think is the least you'd take for it?' DON'T say another word until he finally answers and gives you a SPECIFIC price. Even if he hems and haws, don't say a word: at this point, the next person who speaks loses. That is now the new low-price that you can negotiate down from there, especially if you have the cash and can complete the sale immediately. Whatever the price is, you compliment him on his bike first, but then point out a few things that need to be done or repaired, and point out that if the cam tensioners haven't been done, there's a big expense there you'd need to do. Then throw out a 'do you think you could go $xxxx', a price a little under what you think is fair, which allows you to come up a few hundred so you both 'win'. Point out that it'd be great to have the bike, and that he knows you'll take care of his 'baby'.
Remember that he has a bike he can no longer ride, and it's already in your garage.
