Just put the oil of your choice in it and ride it. How many failures are really caused by the oil? I bet you cant find one that was proven to be caused by oil. I shop around and buy whats on sale, now running vr1 20w50 synthetic in the engine(2.99 qt) rotella 15w40 in the primary and motorcraft 75w140 in the trans. When the vr1 is gone I will be looking for oil sales again.

Straight 30 motor oil is the Harley default. No need for gear oil since it's just using spur gears (not worm or hypoid gears where high pressures are encountered) and they're only pushing around a thousand pounds, and not kicking out much in the way of HP. Automotive manual transmissions in high performance cars last just fine with 5W-20.

Gear oil won't hurt anything, of course, but it also doesn't really help you either.

Be careful there my friend. There is enough confusion on these oil threads without getting everyone out in the weeds by telling them they are the "same weight".
A safer topic would be what is the best condom or the best beer. Opinions will vary widely and there will never be a consensus about anything discussed.

This is my first Harley and I did my first 1000 mile oil change myself I went with syn 3 in all 3 holes because that's what the manual and the hd shop recommended. I am not happy with it and will go with the mobile v1 the next oil change but my big question is if you use 3 different kinds of oil is there a chance of them mixing together and by the way I like reading allof the oil threads and others that helps bring us new guys up to speed on cecertain things
