Hello HD World. I have a 2012 Street Glide and considering replacing my stock wheel with a 21" wheel. Would like to here from those who have made this change and see what they like or don't like about switching to a 21" wheel.
I only had my stock wheels on for a couple of months then got the RC Component (Prowler) wheels so not enough time on the stocks to give a fair comparison. They ride fine, nothing to notice or complain about. And no change to rake or forks other then putting the chrome ones on. Go for it! You won't regret it. But if you get the front, get the matching rear as well, it will bug the snot out of you later that you didn't.
I had mine stock on for a little over 6k miles. I love the new 21". Only noticeable difference was at parking lot speeds, wanted to flop a little but after a few rides you adjust and I don't even notice it now.
I recently installed a DNA 21 chrome Mammoth Spoke and white wall tire. I love the look. The one thing that so many of these threads about 21 wheels on touring bikes fail to discuss is tire clearance. Lots of people can bolt them on an call it a day, others burn their paint. A common solution is to drill out your fender mounting holes and raise the fender up a 1/16 of an inch for safety. I had a shop cut and reweld my tabs, but that's just me. I could have gotten away with drilling the mounts. Just don't jump in and "assume" the big 21s are a guaranteed bolt on and go, because that's not always the case. Its especially easy to burn your fender if you let a front tire get low on air and it grows more than a aired up tire. And given the forum tales of DNA leak down, its just something to make yourself aware of. The benefit is that you see so many 21 baggers with cool a$$ custom front fenders!
It's not a look I like personally and don't have any plans to fit one. Either you like them or don't and it really is up to you to make that decision. There are a lot of members with 21" wheels and bigger, so take a little time out to look back through recent threads. You will find that 'Search' will help!
