Default 2004 EG charging problem

I was out for a ride last week one warm day just zipping up the interstate when I noticed a couple warning lights illuminated on the speedo. The engine and battery light were on. Looking at voltmeter I see the prob and was showing only 10 volts

I get off the next exit and go back a few exits where I knew there was a dealership. They got me right in and plugged it in and confirmed it was only charging 10 or so volts. I was told it was either the stator or voltage regulator but they couldn't be sure which one until they tore into it. They didn't charge me a dime for the quick troubleshoot and couldn't fit me in to fix that day (it was around 4:00pm) so I just rode it home about 20 miles

My question is, is there a way to tell exactly what is wrong? I'm not a mechanic but I would think they would be able to tell which part was faulty? At least have a good idea?

Thanks

Yes they can diagnose the stator separate from the regulator but as you say 4 O'clock and late. They probably just put a test meter at the battery to see what voltage was being pumped into the battery. 10 is not good. So that is just an initial test.

For you....I would check the negative battery cable. Look at the bolts that hold the starter into the primary....you should see the cable there. Make sure that that bolt is tight. Barring stator or regulator failure, this is the most common problem on your year model of bike. Tightening of that bolt might save you a trip back to the dealer if that is the problem.

Oh and another thing....follow the wires back from the regulator. One of the wires is a ground and should terminate at a bolt on the side toward the bottom of the transmission on the right side. That bolt holds the regulator ground sometimes gets corroded or loose.

These are the most obvious things to check and are real easy.

Yes! Go to the DIY Electrical forum here and there are a couple of Stickies with instructions. You need a multimeter, but should be able to diagnose the cause of your problem.

One thing I just remembered is I washed the bike about a week before this incident. This was the first time I ran the bike since I washed it. Could this have created some corrosion somewhere?

Unlikely in a week, however water could have got into a loose or poor connection, that is for sure. I usually run my bikes immediately after washing, to check all is well!
