Default Clutch Problem on '07 RKC

My clutch keeps developing a lot of slack on my '07 Road King Classic. When I left for the day the clutch was nice and tight with just enough play so that I knew it was fully disengaged. It stayed that way for most of the day. By the time I returned home this evening the clutch had a lot of slack in it. The jam nut was very tight against adjustment nut. This is the second time in less than a week the clutch has become loose for no obvious reason. The bike has 45K on it. Is it time to replace the cable? What could be causing this?

I would pop off the derby cover and check the free play adjustment rod. The jamb nut on that might have worked loose.

Thanks for responding. That sounds like a possible cause. I'm not much of a DIY guy, anything I need to know about removing the derby cover before I get started? i.e. replacing gaskets, replacing oil, etc.?

The stock derby cover uses a reusable o-ring, custom ones usually need a gasket. I've reused my gasket several times with no issues. No need to drain the primary oil when removing the cover as the level should be below the opening. If you haven't changed the primary oil in a few years now would be a good time as you need to remove the derby cover to add oil.

Make sure you use a 27 Torx bit for removing the derby cover screws. Some Torx sets don't have this size in them and a 25 will strip out the head. 27's are readily available though.
