Default Super Confused

Hi Everyone,

This may be a little long, so I apologize in advance.

I have been riding for almost fifteen years, and have had several sport bikes including Ducati, Aprilia, etc.. With these bikes, when it came to changing the performance, it was pretty simple. You changed the exhaust and header system, along with either a Power Commander or specific manufacturer PC module.

So fast forward to 2013, and I now have a 2013 Road King Classic. The bike is 100% stock, except that I threw some Vance and Hines Fishtails on it to make it look a little different.

I have purchased a number of other items, and want to make sure that I am making the right decision. I read a lot of stuff on here, with regards to the way to do this. Here is what I have purchased thus far, as I am looking for opinions on whether this will work and what I have to do to get it setup.

1. Vance and Hines Fishtail exhaust
2. Vance and Hines Dual Dresseer Headers
3. Screamin Eagle Stage 1 Air Cleaner Kit
4. Screamin Eagle Round K&N filter
5. Screamin’ EagleŽ Pro Super Tuner - 32109-08C

So.....my thoughts were to have this for now, and as I add stuff like cams, big bore kit, etc... the super tuner thing could be updated?

A couple of questions:

Can I install all of this stuff myself and then drive the bike to the dealer to have him tune it?

Is that a stupid idea?

Do I need to dyne the bike with this stuff?

Is this overkill?

Thanks in advance!

Personally, I would install myself, and be happy...

I don't know anything about the Screamin’ EagleŽ Pro Super Tuner...

Does it allow you to "Vtune" or "Autotune" while riding?

I'm sure there is a way.

Dyno tuning is never a bad idea, but it can be costly. If you can build a good map without a dyno, for most guys riding the street is good enough. A dyno can pull a bit more out of the engine, and you may see that on the track, but down the highway isn't AS important. You can get it running "right" without.

Depends on what you want out of it.

The pro tuner will have base maps to start with for close to what you are adding .it will marry itself to that ecu once you install it. It is fully re mappable at any time. As far as fine tuning It will data log and you can use the smart tune feature . However this is relying on your factory narrow band sensors. To get a 100% tune you really should dial it on on a dyno using wide band o2's.

I don't think it's overkill at all. It should be a nice setup for you. I would change the cams and forget about the big bore, unless you're really serious about getting as much out of it as you can. The stuff you got, with new cams would give you a great boost.

I changed my exhaust, intake, and cams all myself. I brought Super tuner and the bike to a local indy shop and they threw it on the dyno. Can't beat it, came out perfectly tuned, and I only paid around $150 to get it done.

It really depends on who ya want tuning your bike as to what tuner to get/have. I'd be very surprised if there is a canned map for any aftermarket header included with the SEPST or available from the dealer? While ya can screw around data logging and changing the tune there is just no beating a proper dyno tune by someone who knows what they are doing. It is never overkill!

2. Vance and Hines Dresser Duals

A couple of questions:

Can I install all of this stuff myself and then drive the bike to the dealer to have him tune it? Yes, you can install those parts yourself, although you don't really "install" the SEPST. It's connected in-line between your laptop and your bike's ECU.

Using the SEPST you can download and flash a tune that will be very close to the set-up you have listed, so it will already be tuned.

Is that a stupid idea? Yes.

Do I need to dyno the bike with this stuff? No. That said, if you want to squeeze every ounce of HP and Torque out of your motor, or if you want to squeeze every MPG out of your fuel tank, then YES, get it dyno'ed. For the average rider, you can survive quite nicely with a canned tune.

Is this overkill? No. Your setup is vey typical.

Not a fan of HD tuners, Power Commander or Thundermax are better choices IMHO use the O2 sensors to dial it in.

I dyno run all of my bikes after a major change, mostly because I want to see the A/F ratio across the whole RPM range, I have a guy that does it for 35 bucks, cheap insurance and peace of mind for me.

I would rather upgrade the cams than tear into a perfectly good motor to bump displacement, If you are really ambitious pull the heads, get them optimized for your cam/exhaust/intake parts, you can shave them to get compression, port & polish gets a bit of performance that HD left in there.

I'm beginning to think a dyno is a waste of money if you get a power vision or commander with auto tune and a good map your good to go. When I do cams in the SG I'm going with a power vision/auto tune from fuelmoto
