when coming to a light behind other traffic, i line up so that I can see the driver in his side mirror, and get the light in there too.
while stopped, the right foot is on the brake and the bike is in gear- watch for traffic coming from behind ...be ready to pull up if it looks like they won't stop.
here's how I learned;
I was hit from behind once at a red, the rider who hit me was unlicensed, on a borrowed bike, no insurance...their inexperience caused a skid and whacked the end of my muffler, pushing my bike into the middle of the intersection, where it fell over.
after they hit me, they ran the handlebar end all the way down a new Benz out on a test drive
We were somewhere in the mountains stopped at a construction stop and the tractor trailer in front of us just started rolling back fast. Luckily I was far enough away from him but naturally I assumed he was going to wake up and stop, he didn't and almost hit the car behind me. If I wasn't paying attention and had not rolled back into the other lane we would have been flattened! He did give us the woops wave but my heart was pounding to fast to get angry, we were very loaded and the wife was on the back. One of the closest calls I've ever had.

This is why you shouldn't ride when your loaded! Haha seriously this is why you leave some space in front at the light. Glad you and the op wasn't hurt... Well I think the op wasn't hurt??
When I get to a light and I'm behind someone, I get where I can see the driver in his side mirror and make sure my thumb is ready to hit the horn. And I try not to get that close to them.
