I went with the Hog Tunes 5x7 speakers & 70 watt amp. Having a radio that takes 8 ohm speakers limited my choices, and I found a great deal on eBay for a brand new setup. Works well for me, and my passenger is happy too.
My opinion is to get rid of teh stock head unit, get a new one, an amp and some speakers.
I got a Sony head unit, the same amp shown above (Rockford Fosgate PRB 300x2)and a set of Polk speakers and installed it all a few weeks ago so I have had enough time to evaluate how it sounds compared to stock. Much better although I think a different set of speakers would really set this system off. Check out the audio section as there is lots of good info over there too. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/audio-systems-153/
I did the HD Boom speaker replacements back when I got my bike and they are a little better than stock , for $75.00 its worth it but its not really enough to consider it a big improvement.
If you are going to do it, do it right and go with a amp and quality speakers anything less really is not much difference. A couple of the people I ride with have Hog Tunes set up and they sound good and are plug and play http://www.hogtunes.com/products/pro.../06-newer.html
I would like to put a hogtune'd set-up next to mine and compare cost and sound results.
I am not bashing, I really would like to know. I assume mine is better, but could be wrong. I would bet mine cost more, but would like to see if it is worth it.
Then, for the $$, we could all compare options better.
Anyone in So. Cal want to meet up at Cooks and compare? Come back and post what we learn?
I am so confused. I have a 12 street glide and I just added a hd 40 per channel amp. I am trying to decide what speakers to upgrade to...suggestions? friend told me hogtunes?

I think with the HD amp ya need to stay with 2ohm speakers? JBL/Infinity make some good ones but ya may get by with Polk mm651 which is 2.7 ohm. Arc/Dragonfly make good adapters to fit 6.5" speakers in the fairing. Much better bang for the buck with non bike specific stuff.
If I had a RG lol like that's gonna happen... lol. I agree with hogpro 1st thing I would do is swap out the head unit for a nice new unit with all the bells and whistles... sat radio navigation with a flip out screen since it won't block out your gauges and then build from there.

The impedance of the radio is negated by the amp. Instead of 8 ohm, you can use whatever the amp is rated for.
