Yeah it was the canister type. Drop the bolt remove the filter and shove in a roll of TP.

All filters spec'ed for the current HD engine will be made to HD requirements. They will filter to 10 microns, have a bypass valve rated to HD spec's and of course the proper thread and gasket.

However the components may differ such as the filter media.

I use Fram 6022 for years now. I get them at half HD's price. There is no need to overpay for replacement items. HD has a higher markup than most aftermarket suppliers.

Did you coat the gasket with fresh oil before installing? Also, before doing anything else just go and turn the filter another 1/4 turn. It just may be loose and you did not get a full 1/2 turn on it. Some turn of the new filter until contact are different by each person. I go to a strong contact + 1/2.

I have been using Fram filters since the 60's on everything from a Pinto to Vipers. I run 12 motorcycles all Fram never a issue. I have inspected the interior of the HD filter and Fram. The Fram was more substantial particularly the top disc that screws onto the holder.
To add to the above:

Before you buy into all the bad info about Fram, check out this link below. It might surprise you. I killed some time in Walmart the other day looking at filters. I compared them side by side as best you can without tearing one open. (They had AC/Delco, Motorcraft, Purolater, Bosch and Mopar.) I was surprised. I won't say what I discovered. You go look and compare for yourself. Remember, just because somebody said so on the internet, don't make it so. BTW, they had the Chrome Fram filter to fit all late model HDs for $11.99 if I remember correctly. (I forget the part #) Check out this story below, it is pretty interesting.

Your A&P mech is right, most aircraft engines(piston and turbine) use cleanable filters, filters are removed at specified intervals inspected for metal then cleaned and reinstalled. Most turbine filters have to be sent back to a specialized facility for cleaning and re certification. I believe some newer fixed wing piston engines use spin-ons.

To all of you geniuses that spew "HD makes the best filter for our hogs" crap and "Fram is junk" baloney. Champion Labs that make many oil filters includes HD's and Fram, have merged. They are 1 and the same now. So believe what you want but just buy a damn filter that is spec'd out and you will be fine.

never use a wrench to put a filter on--put it on hand tight only.

And never skimp on lube--oil is your motor's blood, and the filter its kidneys.

When you go to their catalog, Fram, Bosch, Wix, etc and then you go to your make model and year there is a filter number specified for fitment.

Yeah...I remover the JC Whitney toilet paper oil filters. I wonder if the choice of TP brand is a function of whether you use Dino or Synthetic?

I believe that would be a fitment catalog. A specification of a filter i would say is the micron rating, paper material, wether or not it has a check valve or at what spring rate the bypass is set at.
