Planning our trip to Alaska in July and one thing that came up is getting a satellite phone for emergency's. Non of us seem to know anything much about them. Did a little reseach but I figured I'd ask here if anyone has first hand info on renting one. Which type and from who.ect.
I get several for work yearly from ROADPOST They provide great service - not too terribly expensive unless you start using minutes. Also, realize there are a LOT of numbers to push to dial out. Make SURE you understand the process before you leave (clear line of sight up, and the dial out numbers) Have a great trip!

You won't need it unless you are going way off road. Cell service is available most areas

I have made the ride to Alaska many times and always take a SAT Phone with me. Cell reception is very limited away from the towns and cities. Remember the nearest emergency help could be 300 miles away. You will be in remote areas on your ride and may need assistance/help and the SAT Phone is the fastest way to get it.
I have never had to use it, but there is always the first time!

Thats what we're thinking. Better to have it and not need it yada yada... The Spot is cool but I'm hoping we don't need a Search and Rescue team for a flat tire!
There is this. http://blog.delorme.com/2010/01/06/d...communication/
But you have to buy it and we'll only need it for a month or so.
I've used Iridium phones and they seem to get service most anywhere, also Globalstar is good too. They both have been around for quite a while. I used Iridium while working around the outer islands of Belize.
The SPOT satellite tracker has an emergency function so that if you need immediate help they have your lat/long location and can send help. Take a look at the website and judge for your self. I have been using SPOT for three years and fortunately have never had to use the help function, but always glad it is available if needed.
Ride safe.
