Default tech questions, 2012 FLHP

first post, been reading the site for a few , thanks for all the usefull info..

ok so I got my first new Harley, ok, it had 2640 miles , new enough.. but out of my savy know how at the moment.. 80inchers 88 inchers no problem, this is a new beast..

anyway..
this is a police bike , Im a short fu$k, solo cop seat I just removed, badlands seat on the way and the dealer hooked me up with a stock touring 2up seat, my question is , what do I use for the seat bolt in the rear..
do I really have to put the bike in the air every time I wanna take the seat off by reaching between the tire and rear fender ?

also ebay has no rear peg mounts, best place to locate these is ?

last question of this post, rear shock mods?
no just repositioning them like most lowering bracket in the rear, but is there a safe tried and trued mod?

thanks

There is a captive nut that should be in the rear seat hole; if not, you can get one at your dealer. Easy to install; you need a couple long zip ties. Then, you thread the seat bolt in to install the seat & out when you need to remove the seat. Takes about 5 seconds.

You can also put Street Glide rear shocks on it, they will drop you another inch. Also, welcome to the forum.

You might want to check out the Retired Police Bike Forum for police-bike specific technical info.

Here is an install thread that I posted there last Spring showing the install of the captive seat nut that dickey mentioned. The part numbers are given in that thread.

rear peg or pass floorboards, check the classified ads here at the forums.

and your local craigslist.

I use the 12" shocks, but the ride is harsher. some use 1" lowering blocks & there are $$$ shock options.

Do a little reading and see what seems to be smart for you ( and I put my 13" shocks back on when touring)

I still have the cop seat on my Classic and not planning on taken it off any time soon. Although I don't need to be lowered(I'm 6-9), but I don't like the way the CS sets you up so high. I took the air bladder out and then cut half of the rubber bumpers off. The seat sets down on the frame and I love it that way. I also made my own brackets to move the TP up for the back rest.

5'7" – not really short for this bike. I am using it with the original air seat. Had to modify it a bit, see my posts over at cop bike forum. I would not recommend lowering the shocks – you will lose that precious little suspension travel there is, I would rather get a cheap lowering kit off e–bay. This, together with lower seat, will do the trick.

to put that captive nut on, i run a straightened coat hanger through the hole from the top, down beside the tire and then put the captive nut on it and bend the end of the coat hanger to keep it from falling off. pull the coat hanger up, until the top of the nut comes through the fender and put the plastic c clip on it. then straighten the end of the coat hanger and remove.

easy
