RE: How many have or will purchase an HD extended warranty?
Even with the ability to Wrench on the bike yourself, the Warrenty covers all original equipment. so if my radio, or engine goes after the 2 year factory warrenty, 50.00 gets it fixed...can you rebuild an engine for 50.00?? Can you replace the radio system for 50.00?? I know I can't, so the piece of mind was worth every penny on both bikes that sit in my garage.
RE: How many have or will purchase an HD extended warranty?
Ah do mah own wrenchin' - recently bought a Handy Lift ta help w/that. Guess what? Bought the 7-year warranty as well. If the engine goes "splat" 4 years from now ah figger that while ah CAN rebuild it, it could git expensive...
RE: How many have or will purchase an HD extended warranty?
After dealing with a warranty claim on my first Harley, no thank you...
I had a Heritage which, six months after purchase, began rubbing the fender on the chrome cowbell. It was obviously a fit and finish problem from the factory yet it took almost five months of arguing with HD Customer (lack-of) Service before they fixed it. I went through the dealer, warranty claims at HD, rebuttal to warranty denial, Better Business Bureau, etc. When Istarted a case with my state Attorney General's officethey relented...
Since I have experienced their warranty coverage on a new bike for the basic, I'm not giving them money to extend their lack of coverage.
RE: How many have or will purchase an HD extended warranty?
Thought about the extended warranty& maintenanceand decided I would be better off putting $100 a month in savings account. If something goes wrong with bike It should help to cover it, and if not then I am ahead. Still have peace of mind. Seemed like best way to go for me. Something to think about.
RE: How many have or will purchase an HD extended warranty?
I've owned 4 Harley's over the years. I have an '07 Ultra now. Not one of the bikes I had ever had a problem.....at all. Sure I had flat tires, and brake pads, but that's supposed to happen. My syance is that HD makes a great product and that is why I purchsed it. I have a high level of confidence in the product based on this experience. To me, and just MHO, the extended warranty si a show of my lack of faith in the product. When I weigh the odds of what I see are having to buy parts and labor in case of an unlikely event, against shelling out right up front for insurance that I really feel I won't have to use......well................it's a math problem. Why not take that extended warranty money and put in an investment that gives your some $$ return. If you need it later, it's there, if not, it's still there. I'll wrench on my bike if I have to. And if I get caught out on the road, I'm financially responsible enough to get back home. I feel that my Harley's have all been better quality than any of the autos I have owned and I don't buy extended warranties on them either. I'm 48 yrs old and I don't feel like I've suffered a loss or left money on the table over any of this. Just my 2-cents.
RE: How many have or will purchase an HD extended warranty?
My dad used to sell appliances for Sears, he absolutely hated having to push the extended warranties as a part of his job. Kenmore washers run forever, I've got one we've had for over 25 years.
However with that said, I did purchase the extra 5 years. I shopped for the best deal on a RK in my area, 4 different dealers. My credit is good and I had options for financing. H-D credit had a good rate. When we got down to whether I wanted to purchase the extened warrany, I was offered a finance rate discount of 2%. When you do the math of the interest savings over the life of the loan it dropped the actual cost of the warranty down to a point where you couldn't say no, less than $100 per year. Like has been said it's a little abouit peace of mind.
I can turn a few wrenches, used to build drag race engines on the side as a hobby. In the next year, I'll do my own big bore / cam change. But sometimes I don't have the time or the inclination to do some of the service work myself, warranty or not. So far my RK has been geat, absolutely no trouble. Which has caused me another problem, I think I want a RG but I can't come up with a logical reason to get rid of the RK.
I have used the road hazard part of the extended warranty twice so far for the replacement of two tires, one front and one rear. Bought the bike in June 2005 and Sunday I hit 30,000 miles. My thinking is with the miles I planned on riding and keeping the bike 4-5 years, I may (and it's a gamble) get some use out of the warranty. If you figure what I saved on the interest of the fianacing and the cost of replacement for two tires, I've pretty much already gotten my money back.

I bought the Extened Warranty. I work my full time job as a firefighter/Police Officer. I work off duty to make the HD payment. I also have two toddlers that take alot of my time. I bought the 7 years extended warranty. Mine also covered the first 5 services and wheel and tire coverage. I paid about $2300.00 for all of that but I know it is covered, one less thing to worry about.

RE: How many have or will purchase an HD extended warranty?
I bought the extended warranty simply because I was buying a used bike and did not have much history on it. I also can turn a wrench, but after being in my office all week and various duties with my family, church, community during the week I would really rather spend my time riding and not wrenching. It is not a matter of learning it is a choice not to. I did purchase an extended warranty on a new car once and when the motor went after the factory warranty did it was nise to pay $100.00 to have a new factory ($5K) engine put in! I also think if not 'road service' it matters on your selling/servicing dealer. I have already had a few thoings fixed under warranty that are not normal warranty items. The dealer makes a difference.
RE: How many have or will purchase an HD extended warranty?
ABSOLUTE WASTE OF MONEY! When was the last time you heard of someones engine "blowin-up" on a stock HD. They're such simple engines that it rarely happens, usually only from beatin the snot out of it. If they run good after a full season the engine is gonna be fine. it's the smaller stuff that may act up and those parts aren't hard to replace and certainly not worth payin $900+ to cover on an extended warranty...my .02
