RE: How many have or will purchase an HD extended warranty?
I have an 05 UC. The 2 years ended on Mar1. I just bought a 3 year from Zannotti for $950. I bouht the bike used, and so far have had about $300 worth of warranty work(shift shaft seal and throttle linkage). Maybe I dont need it, but in my own personal experience, they are usually worth it. I am typing on a brand new $1000 HP laptop from Best Buy, provided from the $135 3 year warranty. The old laptop failed on the last day of the warranty. I also have a new Sony Camera ($550)from a $45 extended warranty, again from best buy. Things fail, even very good things. I hated forking out $950, but at $300 a year not that bad. I actually hope I never need it, but if I do, I am covered. It is also easier on resale if it is covered. And you can always cash out. Just my 2 cents.

The Sales Manager was quite assuming when I bought my RK Classic in Jun 06. As I walked in his door he said, "I have it all ready for you." When he went over the price, down payment and payments, something didn't seem quite right. Of course he had it on his computer screen. I said to print it out and had to ask to see the paper. He wasn't happy when I told him to take off the extended warranty. Any consumer advocate will tell you they are a bad deal. The dealer is betting you won't use it. You are buying insurance. If the product is so good, I don't need an extended warranty.

I bought the 5 year EW and was actually looking atwhat the process would beto drop it. I'm still not sure but $1000.00 does go a long way toward shiny things!
I want to put on a Thundermax ECM, anew AC and slip-ons, I don't think the warranty will do any good anyway unless the radio fails
RE: How many have or will purchase an HD extended warranty?
I just filled out the paperwork to drop my 7 year extended warranty. I bought an 07 Ultra in December with the warranty. I never did feel just right about it and went back and forth several times on whether to keep it or not. I went over the "what is covered and what is not covered" several times. The warranty doesn't cover anything that would normally wear out. I also talked to the local dealer service manager and parts manager. They both told me that unless they install any mods, they would not warranty the bike (even SE air and SE Pipes).
I figure if somethin is going to break from a defect, it will break in the first two years under the factory warranty. With everything considered, the only reason I could find to keep the extended warranty was to cover the stereo system. Guess I'll just take a chance on that.
I can't see going for 7 years and not doing any mods; or paying the dealer $65 to install a SE Air Breather. I'm going to get the service manual and do all my own work. Besides, I paid $270 for the 1000 mile service, thinking they would go over the bike and check everything. On the way home I thought I heard an exhaust leak. Grabbed the right muffler and sure enough it was loose. If they can't even find that, I just can't trust them to take care of my baby.
I won't get the money back, but it will come off the end of my loan. Then I can trade sooner.

Mine runs out june 1st (factory warranty). I have the HD repair manual. I service my bike and do it per factory specs. I dont use harley oils but use what I think (researched) is better. Maintain it (not much work) plus you learn and can help others save money. If you do it you know its right. Took my 05 ultra in for NC inspection 2 weeks ago, they said the horn was defective and replaced under HD warrant y$95, which I did not mind since no outta pocket to me, I watched the mechanic leave for a test drive I assume ( or maybe a drive to Hooters) anyways when he returned I payed for the inspection got on the bike an left. Got maybe a mile down the road I hear a clanking noise, whats this I `m thinking, I pull over and still hear it. I lean over to the left side of the bike and think hmmm maybe the horn sure enough they installed it cocked eyed and it hitting the cooling fins. OK but he should have heard it like I did. Another 5 miles down the road my engine light comes on I`m thinking what did they do to cause this, did they do it intentionally to possibly get some moremoney out of me. On the way home I remember on the way to HD I was driving 100-105 mph in case the State Trooper I passed doing 75 turned around, maybe that had something to do with it. Long story short I read in here that the spark plugs could cause this so I`m like change the plugs. Buy the plugs go home start to remove the plug wire from the rear cylinder S.O.B. its just laying on top of the plug, not plugged onto it.What beside this plug wire? anwser the Horn. I`ll do must of the work so I KNOW its done right and not just another bike that needs to get out of the shop!! Treat it right It you will not have problems 95% of the time. If you drive it like you dont care , Buy the warranty!

Yeah, the dealer did something similar to my bike about not plugging in the spotlights socket correctly -- when I got 30 miles away my spotlights stopped working. Didn't work for several days and when I was putting air in the tires I noticed the plug hanging down. easy fix.
Another item -- service mechanic failed to tighten my battery connections. I bought an inch-pound torque wrench and I'm going to hit every bolt when I get my manual in the mail.
One service shop BOZO screwed up and overtightened my rear sprocket bolts. 2 snapped off (either during service and they didn't tell me OR they stretched the bolt necks and they snapped later) and the 3rd snapped at a city stoplight after the bike wouldn't move when I let our the clutch. 125 miles after service -- PING -- I watched a bolt go flying into the median -- looked at the rear tire and found the problem. I nursed it back to the shop 2 miles down the road and there was one more bolt half-way out and the other finger tight. For an unknown reason I took the city route that morning instead of the highway. Loosing a rear sprocket at 65 would have been a nightmare.
The service department blamed the chrome bolts. I just had them install the correct machine grade bolts in place -- who cares about the chrome with that type of risk.

If a warranty will be honored with intergrity I would say yes... if not I say no. So far in my life there are none who have given me any 'piece of mind'....
