What years of outer fairingsare directlyswappable with 2006 RG? Is it 2002 and up? It may sound like an obvious question but I can't find this answer anywhere. Basically I can get a painted'04 outer fairingfor a great price and would like to put it on my bike but keep the original in case I want to revert back to the stock look.
There was a change in 04 to the present in the fairing, 03 and back was different, they even require a different windshield. If you look in the parts book, all windshields say fits up to 03, or 04 and up.
Actually, I "think" even older ones would work. The change in 04 had to do with changing the "angle" the fairing is mounted to the bike, not necessarily the fairing itself.
I had an 02 RG and now an 05. I have one of the smoked 100th anniversary windshields that I used on my 02 and really liked. I have installed it on my 05 and it bolts up just fine, "BUT" the shield stands up almost straight and looks stupid. It seems the difference in windshields is the angle(s) they are cut with. The result, on either old style or new style, is a shield that is at a reasonable angle ~ regardless of the angle the entire fairing is mounted on.
Phil is correct. All RG inner and outer fairings (98-07) are the same. They changed the mounting bracketsin 04 to change the angle (put the nose down 4 degrees). All windshields will work for any fairing also (they all mount the same). But the w/s's are designed by HD and aftermarket companies for either the 98-03 angle or the 04 - later angle.
I converted my Electra Glide to a Road Glide last winter, so I did a bunch of research prior to.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
Ride on, ride well.
