Just got my new Road Glide in and want to replace the windshield. I've read various posts a few months ago and know those well nuts are a royal pain at times. Can anyone give me any feedback or "tricks" that will assist during the change over? I.e.. loosen certain screws first or..........
I don't know any way around the well nuts. They are a royal pain. I always keep a few extra on hand since it seems like I always push one in when I take the windshield off. Yesterday I put a Clearview shield on my RG. It's fantastic. You don't have to fight the rubber trim gasket like you do on a HD shield. The clearview is a lot heavier and maintains it shape better when off the bike which makes it easier to put back on. Check them out at clearviewshields.com
Dont be so quick to discard the original. I have tried them all, clearview, baileys, those on ebay too.
Here is what I learned. The stock windshield turned out to be the best for me so its back on. I tried a smoke tinted baileys, its fit was not the best and the tint color looked too dark, it arived with a deep scratch so back it went. The ebay ones are IMO, a POS they are flat so you have to bend them, this makes the holes on the rear not line up right and the holes are to large so it just doesnt mount up right. Clearview is the best made, comes with attached ruber gasket and well nuts, fits good but the one that is said to be 1 inch shorter than stock is the same hieght and if you use other than stock bars the brake resv. hits the edge when you turn left. Then I bought the 9 inch clearview with the recurve top and there is so much turbulance with those short ones its useless to try and ride above 50 unless you like being blown all over the place. Anybody needing a new dark 10 inch, or the 9 inch clearview( used 50 miles) just pm me.
Glad to hear about your experience with wind shield. Dealer let me ride owners RG with small shield . Bout blowed me away. Bought 07RG. Put chrome trim around windshield. It was a B...... . Would not replace windshield if someone gave me one.

Thanks!

Hopefully, this well help. Start loosening at one side and loosen the corresponding screw on the other side. Remove in the same order and leave the center one for last. When you re-install, put the center screw in first, then the one to the left and right of center, then the end ones. Leave everything "un-snug" until all are in, then snug them down. don't really crank on 'em or you'll break the well nut in two.
I have a Clearview GT Medium. It fits me perfectly, and my bars are Dyna WideGlide Chrome Mini-apes. They don't hit the shield. The Clearview can be cleaned with ammonia-based liquids as it is not coated as HD. You can apply Rain-X to them, even Novus plastic polish. Great products, but height is important. They will assist you in selection. Worth every penny IMO.
I started looking for a replacement the day I got theRoad Glide. For me, the problem was distortion. Even though I looked over the top, on hills, twisties ,etc you sometimes have to look through it and things were so distorted as to be dangerous. Road edges, center lines, etc were in different places depending it you were looking through or over the shield. Sometimes I did both and there were double lines.
Got the Clearview and quite happy with it. It fit well, less turbulence, and no distortion.
To get rid of the last bit of turbulence, I got a Laminar Lip to use on trips. For local rides, I leave it in the saddlebag.
I also got the adjustable vent on the Clearview. It hasn't been warm enough to wear my mesh jacket, so I don't know yetif going to have any effect.
I believe I had a Laminar Lip years ago on a 1977 BMW R100RS windshield. It's a molded rubber peice that goes over the edge of your windshield. It has a recurve section towards the front that catches the airflow and directs it higher over the rider than the windshield alone allows. They are functional and butt-ugly.....kinda expensive per foot. too. You can take it off and put it back on easily.
Try www.saeng.com. They might call theirs something else like Stealth Edging............
Hey boogyman - I also read and was worried about the rubber parts - I even bought 5 extra and have never needed them... still using the first set - its been a non issue with me. Still got your shield when ever you are ready....
