I used mine twice and didnt care for it. Fairly easy to install though. You might want to stand back when you make adjustments though. That dang thing makes "violent" adjustments when you move the lever.

You should be leaning against it when you make adjustements but even if your not, it's not going to hurt anything.
Yes, routing the cable properly is probably the hardest part of the install.
The HD instructions leave a lot to be desired but commen sense should prevail.
Check out the Kuryakyn backrest part # 1670. take a look at it on the website. The backrest can be turned around to move you forward or back as well. Also has a little zipper pocket on the back. Installs in about 15 minutes. You can find it for about $160. You can adjust the height by just pulling it up or pushing it down into the detents. You can also adjust the fore & back position. Although it is not on the fly. I have used mine for about 5000 miles and love it. I can do 700 miles in a day with no back ache.
That is the HUGE advantage of the HD adjustable one. The ones I see guys complaining about are the ones that are fixed until you stop and take it out. I have a bad back and I like that I can constantly adjust my position with the lever while riding.
Oh and to the poster complaining that the adjustments are violent. You're supposed to be leaning against the back rest while adjusting it.
Everyone likes different seats and backrest or no backrest for what feels good to them. I have a bed back to, fused at L3, L4, L5, & S1, a backrest made day and night as far as comfort for me. I look at it like this; if I'm going to spend $150.00-$200.00 for one check out all of them you can. For me I don't settle to save a few bucks and then wish I had something else. For a few bucks more if need be get what you really like. I personally have and love the adjustable one form H.D. I can make small adjustments on the fly and change position, which equals much more comfort. I sometimes go the dealer and check out used bikes to try out stuff or see what others have done to get ideas. The install took about an hour...including a few brews.
Just installed one on a road glide ultra. Took 15 minutes. Biggest challange was where the contoller mounts. It goes under the LH heat guard with the cable pointed down. If you do not have a heat guard, then you need to install a slide on bolt to hold the controller plate. If you have a heat guard, just undo the bolt, slap in the controller frame with the controller monuted, run the cable down and up to the back rest, loop it through the center of the back rest frame, connect the free end at the piston, put on seat, install back rest and try it out..
