Default Red Engine Light--Flickers on/off

Hello everyone. I recently purchased my first Harley. She's a beautiful 1998 Road King with just over 5,000 miles. Mint condition.

I picked up the bike and drove her about 200 miles and the red engine light on the tank panel started flickering. I pulled over and check the oil and there was plenty of oil. As I continued to drive the bike, Ilistened for noises, pings, loss of power, acceleration, etc.. and nothing noticeable occurs when it flickers on.It stays on then goes off. Sometime itgoes if I accelerate, sometimes it goes off if I decelerate.

Does anyone have an idea where i start to check for a problem.

Thank you.

Edward

could be a bad sending unit for the oil pressure. some times they go bad, thats why its always best to have a oil pressure gauge in addition to the so called idiot light.

Like Hogtoad stated it could be a bad pressure switch but it may also be a bad ground wire that'sgrounding out occasionally.

If your a GOOD DIYS'r AND have a service manual/schematic for the bike and know how to "troubleshoot", you'll find it. If none or not all of the above, take it to the dealer. My .02 as a professional wrench. Dave

if mufflers plugs are drilled out or removed or aircleaner changed to something like K and N this bike will run very lean and trigger the above problem with-out a power commander..did original owner remove a power commander?
i have a 98 road king classic fuel inj.
you can check computer with-out scanalyzer
easier with book(service manual) Part number 99483-98
switch tu RUN
key off
then
key to IGN for 3 seconds and then off 1 second afetr fuel pump stops
leave the key in off for 3 seconds repeat the above one more time
now turn the key to IGN
wait about 8 second for a bunch of blinking to start
the very slow blinkiing(one per second)
5 slow blinks and 2 second pause followed by 6 slow blinks = #56 cam position sensor (very common)

11 throttle sensor
12 barometric sensor
14 engine temp sensor
15 intake temp sensor
16 battery voltage sensor
23 front inj
24 front ign coil
25 rear ign coil
32 rear inj.
33 fuel pump relay
52/53/54 bad news ecm replacement
55 malfunction
56 crank position sensor/cam position sensor/signal error
the number 56 is very common...a back fire during start could trigger this..as well as the lean conditions above..most times no replacement is needed..

if you ever decide to look or change -out the cam position sensor look under touring..then timer cover change..author im.....as there is no way in hell to get the bottom clip unscrewed from timer cone to remove the wire for this sensor unless you cut an allen wrench to get behind the head pipe.
do not forget to purchase the book(manual)

I'm confused - is it an engine light or an oil pressure light that's flickering? If the light looks like a small engine, then you probably have what's called an "historical code" that can be decoded like the previous comment(s). Historical codes can be glitches and usually don't mean a lot unless they keep recurring - for example, I recently replaced my fuel gauge with a cool unit and it threw a code as soon as the engine fired up the first time. I cleared it and it hasn't returned - yet. Most dealers will read the code(s) without a charge - at least, we do.
