Default Fuel Door Opens the wrong way

Hey,,

I just bought a 2014 Street Glide Special and so far love it.. I've owned 7 or 8 bikes (HD) but this is the first one that has a cover over the gas cap.. Is it me or shouldn't the door open away from you.. I think it would be easier to fuel up.. Anyone know of a kit that flips it around..

it's you.

if the door were mounted other way around, it would hit the inner fairing or flop closed

i see it's your 1st post, welcome to the forums Pete.

i wish they would have just put the tanks on there like the CVO bikes have, with the two caps.

CVO touring models have dash...not 2 caps

on most touring models there is a small drain down by the hinge for any fuel slop.

if the door where the other way around, the recess for the latch might allow any fuel spilled to contact the tank and eat the paint

i'm sure there are other reasons too.

I thought I read somewhere that the location of the hinge was a statutory issue in some markets - hence we have 'one size fits all'...

Don't know if that's true, but it seems feasible in our 'globally harmonized world'

I've asked the question for years. If it was made to open to the front obviously they would make it so it only opens so far (and didn't hit the dash) so that's not really an excuse. Just sayin.

So after years of asking and asking... finally I heard something that kinda makes sense. Reason: All motorcycle fuel doors (least in America) have to open towards the rider for safety considerations. In the event of an accident they don't want the door to pop open and have the rider get impaled on it - or something.

Serious thought to our safety there huh. Thanks safety engineer... Yay my crotch is safe! Too bad about the rest of my body

I'm thinking with the cover opening forward gas can splash out into the cover than back at you, much better to be deflected away from you.
