BUT!!!! they are required in my state to pass safety inspection. Luckily, safety inspection is a one time thing, required the first time you get tags on a bike. You will not pass without the strap on the seat. It's a state requirement for all motorcycles.
What state if you don't mind my asking? A lot of bikes don't have a strap, do they make you add one?
Im in the minority I guess, I actually like the look of the seat with the strap. But I also realize that no passenger could really hold onto that thing really well.
Me too..always figured it would slow a thief an extra second since they would need to cut it and address the seat bolt.

Maryland. The requirement is COMAR 11.14.03.12. Though if the bike has a solo seat and no passenger footpegs, you might well get away with it.
New bikes don't have to go through this inspection, only used bikes. And yes, you'll have to put one on if there is a place for a passenger. I've had to do it before.
Of course, since the inspections are done by individual garages, there is quite a variance in diligence of the inspection.
