Default Thinking about first RK, advice..

Hello folks over here in Touring. I purchased my first HD in 2007, a Dyna Low Rider. I've decided on a 2014 RK. Looked at several at the dealer today.

What's the consensus on the ABS? Saw all the additional plumbing on the right side from the module under the handlebars. I have been riding since 1986, I've been able to control brakes under sudden needs at times. It's a big adder, almost $800.

I'm indifferent about the other options like factory security and don't really want the spoke wheel RKC look with white walls, just my taste.

Will have to out backrest on for the wife, she likes the "security", no decision for me here.

Any other comments? Thought about the Softtail Heritage but I like the hard cases, rubber mounted engine, higher output engine, larger fuel capacity and the look better.

Thanks,
Bob

I had a dynamic switchback then went to a 12 king and hands down the king is the winner. Rides like a caddy.

Default Do it...

I went from a FXWG to the Road King 2 years ago. What a big difference. Also...Is 800 bucks worth stopping quicker if it saves you an accident? You could spend that on shiny stuff in an instant.

Went from a 2011 superglide to a 2014 road King with ABS and security. Added passenger backrest, luggage rack, bag guards and iso grips. I'm very happy with it.

Get the ABS, you never know when/if you'll need it. It's not something you can add on later. RK is a very versatile bike, enjoy.

the overwhelming reason i bought my 09 was the ABS.

when i went to testride...riding my 1995 FLHTC I went to 55 and measured off a panic stop.

I then rode the 2009 FLHTC to 55 and hit the brakes...and literally stopped in better than 2/3 the distance.

the RK is a couple hundred pounds heavier than the dyna...let the abs work the traction control while you figure out how to steer around a problem.
and a big plus on gravel roads.

the security is good, the cruise i thought i'd never use...and do all the time

Apache Trail, ABS is good, very good

I just sold my 2001 RKC and got a 2014 SGS...
I loved the RKC, and so didn't the wife, it was a great touring bike. I wanted a little change so I went with the Super Glide Special.

Good luck

I've had to make 2 emergency stops on my 14 king and both times the rear locked up and was slowly swinging around. Maybe I will get use to it, but if I had got ABS I would feel safer.

Go with the ABS, I wish I did. I agree with you on the spoke deal I'd rather my aluminum wheels and no ABS than ABS & spokes. Tradeoff.

The King is a really great bike. You will love it and you should definitely get ABS.
