Default Getting over on the MAN/Road Trip

Yesterday was a somewhat nice day so the wife and I decide to take a 325 mile roundtrip to have lunch. We gear up and head out. Now we live just outside of South Padre Island and were heading to Corpus Christi, lots of Spring Breakers and LEOs.

1st we hit the Border Patrol check station and there is a long line. We finally get up to about 2 cars from the BP Agents and they are running the K9s all over most vehicles. The Agent/K9 start over towards the bike and wife lets out a “Look at the cute puppy” in a loud voice. The Agent/K9 just turn around and go to the other line, while the Agent checking cars just waves us thru without even asking if we are US Citizens.

2nd on the return trip I am cruising about 20mph over in a construction zone. Wife is laid back on the tour pack reading a book. I have my feet up on the highway pegs listening to a great medical program on the AM about Prostrate Health and wouldn’t you know it but a State Trooper appears right on my tail. He gets right up next to me and my Wife waves at him, and then he takes off.

So I ask the wife what the heck gives? Can’t a biker draw any attention anymore? She says that a couple of 40-somethings on a tour bike don’t rate much during Spring Break with 40,000 Drinking/Parting College kids in the area. I like to believe that I am such a BAD AZZ Biker that they are afraid of me. Somehow I think my wife is correct. Oh well, I’ll just go watch Easy Riders again and dream how I got over on “The Man”.

Well truth of the story is it was a great day out on the road. Had a good time with the wife and bike ran great.

Last Friday I'm cruisin on the slab at 68 (60 here in Washington) in the HOV lane, enjoying life and NOT checking my 6 like I should be, here's a State Patrol right along side of me going 69 and just cruises right by. I have heard from more than a few LEO's that if your behaving yourself they don't stop for a few over the norm.

I give 10 over before I even think about stopping someone...unless there's something else going on. I know when I did my internship in college with a medium sized PD in SW Missouri they stopped at 6 over. It all kinda depends on the department and whether the copper is in the patrol division or in traffic.

You could put a Gay Pride or Move On.org sticker on your tourpak. [:-]
(with the legal PC disclaimer that there is nothing wrong with either position, and I am not defaming anyone )

If an officer is working radar from the side of the road in a 60 mph zone, you probably won't get pulled until you are 10+ mph over the limit. This assumes that your speedometer is accurate. If you want to push 65mph, you'll probably be OK. If you are pushing 70 and your speedo is reading 2mph lower than actual speed....well, thanks for your contribution to the local government.

When the officer is moving in traffic....well that can be an entirely different matter. If you are going 65mph in a 60mph zone and the officer slowly passes by you.....that's a good day for you! If the officer is going 60mph in the 60mph zone and you decide to pass him at 65mph...well you may be getting stopped. You never want to pass a police vehicle while you are violating the speed limit. Gotta use that common sense.

Now I know that everyone knows of an exception somewhere/sometime. The above is simply a general rule to which there will always be exceptions.

Think of it like this...you don't cuss in front of the preacher because he has an obligation to say something to you about your language. The same applies to police officers.....if you pass an officer while you are violating the law, he/she is going to feel compelled to stop you. If he/she doesn't stop you, then everyone else will think that it's OK and begin to do the same thing. Why would you want to stay behind the officer if the guy ahead of you just passed the officer? It's just human nature!

First I would like to say thanks for your service to our country and our citizens. That being said, I think you might have taken Georges post the wrong way. Sounded to me like he was trying to be funny. I had no idea what the moveon.org was till I saw the post and looked it up.( I almost threw-up). It sounded like he was saying that you would likely get pulled over if you had one of those stickers. Now, if I am wrong, and he turns out to support the moveon.org site. Please feel free to punch me in the mouth. (Figuratively, you know, through the computer. Please don't look for me for real.)

Chopperz71, thanks for calming me down. You may be correct and if so I appoligize to Georges. It has been a difficult readjustment this time and I often over-react. I am aware of my problem and am trying to cope.
