You may be right but for my expensive toys, I don't take that chance. Two up. Bag(s). 90+ temps. I want every bit of protection I can get. But hey, do what you want. My bike has never seen 5 k on the oil with Redline 20w-50. Maybe overkill but makes me sleep better at night.

I think I am going to stick with 20/50 since I'm not dealing with the extreme heat that would need a little extra protection.
On a side note, I'm thinking that a synthetic peanut oil could be great for frying a turkey.

I use HD Syn3 in all three holes. Synthetic is more stable at high temperatures than dino. The cost difference for one or two engine oil changes a year is a non-issue for me. I spend more than that on lunches in a week.

I'm sure there are other third party synthetics that are just as good as the Syn3 but I also don't believe the MoCo is inherently evil and their premium synthetic oil probably isn't going to be bad for my engine.

Inherently evil, no. Inherently greedy, absolutely. Lowest bidder oil at a high quality price.

..and since they won't put an spi spec on their oil or an api requirement on their bikes, it makes you wonder. Basically they can bottle crap oil and its always in spec for HD bikes. Hmmmmm

And Syn 3 isn't fully synthetic on top of it all. It a semi synthetic.

According to the "Material Safety Data Sheet" for H-D's SYN3, it is chemically a blend of 60% synthetic and 40% petroleum oils

You are correct Sir! It's new and improved. I went to the HD website (Not something I do very often,) and voila' !

"We’ve updated the SYN3Ž formula with the latest, cutting-edge polymer viscosity modifier technology. Now with even more resistance to breaking down, even in high heat and performance applications."

And the pic says "Full Synthetic" right on the bottle .

"As the only high-performance oil that can be used in all three cavities of a Harley-DavidsonŽ motorcycle, SYN3Ž lubricant offers improved wear protection, high temperature detergency and superior overall field performance."

(I think that this one will get them in trouble sometime down the road.)
