I guess the market is different in other parts of the country. I would never give 10K for an 02. Even with super low miles. That kind of cash gets you a lot newer bike down here in Texas. Take a look at craigslist in Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio to get an idea. If things are that high elsewhere it would be well worth a trip down here to the Lone Star State to buy a bike!
Remember asking price is just that. ASKING. With a pocket full of cash you can usually get a couple grand off!
Very different, up here in NY you're looking at a lot more...
The 09 and newer frame is worth getting less options if you can find one. Eglide standard and then you can finish it off exactly like you want it is also not a bad idea.
Hey, that's what I was gonna say!
I've got an '09 EGS and love it.It was in my budget (and with some looking should be for the OP as well).
Lotta people who have the Classics and Ultras are doing upgrades anyway.
You can then pick up their cast-offs in the parts forum, and save some $$.
I had an '08 Classic that I bought new and put about 30k on, great bike, I loved it!
And having owned, '08, '09, and now a '14 I wouldn't hesitate to take a nice '08 over a standard '09 In fact I think my '08 was a better bike than my '09 was...... fwiw
I would try to atleast find a 07 (96 motor & 6 speed tranny) shouldn't be hard for that kinda money. Even an 09 if you take your time. Good luck!
Good advice, this was my 2nd Harley and 1st plunge into baggers. I had great luck with it and it was a pleasure to own. The 96" with the 6 speed was a good combo. I wouldn't part with my 12 and the 103" now, but the preceding 07 was a sweet bike.
I would buy the highest option bike you can afford, as stated before you can always take some of the stuff off that you don't prefer at that instant, and store it. Adding a trunk to a standard EG, with brackets, wiring, lights, PAINT, etc. will make you wish you had started high option. Shop it to death. Computers have changed the availability of these things to us so much. Fly in, ride it home. My 06 Ultra has been break down free, EXCEPT, the Harmon Kardon radio, in the shop 7 times the first 3 years. Oh and the compensator, but that was under warranty also.
I wouldn't go any older than an 02. That was the first year for the Delphi fuel injection. The prior system is very hard to work on and today, I don't know that anyone really knows enough to work on them anymore. Parts may be an issue as well. 02 saw a new swingarm and front end. It was a far superior handling bike than the 01s and prior. 05s tended to have some valve seal issues. It seemed to be a common issue that year. 06s aren't bad bikes, but it was still a 5 speed. Personally I wouldn't have an 07. Maybe if it already has had IDS added. But the 07s and 08s were both geared too high. It always felt like I was trying to take off in 2nd gear. 08 did have the 6 gal tank, and it had a "bastard" frame. Kind of a combination of the new 09 frame and the old frame. 09 saw the new frame. Better handling and much better engine mounting. You might be able to find a nice 09 or 10 for close to $10k but you will have to do a lot of looking, and it will likely be a higher mileage bike. That may not be a real issue though. It all depends on how much you intend to ride. If you plan to put 3 or 4000 miles a year then mileage isn't too big of an issue. But if you plan to do some serious riding and rack up 8 or 10000 or more miles a year, then it might be an issue and you should probably look at an older bike with lower miles. Just my thoughts. I have owned 2000, 02, 05, 08, 12 and now a 14. No big problems with any. I did have to put cam tensioners and a compensator in the 08. The 05 did have some leaky valve seals and would foul plugs in 10k miles. The 02 and the 12 were trouble free except for an early voltage regulator failure on the 12 (later a recall). Each bike was traded with between 30 to 50k miles. Good luck with your search.

I had a 06 EGC and it was a great bike. But it was to low geared for the interstate on long runs. The newer frame and 6 speed really was better for me doing 2k miles trips.
