For my money, a trip down calif on 101/1 and then back up from San giego on US 395 id the way to go. Lots of country to see and very little traffic once you get north of the LA area...I believe US 395 will take you all the way back to Canada

If this is a few and far between trip to California I would take the coast route but be prepared for some in town riding. When you come across the Golden Gate turn down onto Highway 1 and take it south all the way down to Morro Bay. You can cut over to Highway 101 by going Highway 41 east from Morro Bay. 101 and Hwy 1 join in San Luis Obispo anyway. Stay on Highway 101 south until you hit Oxnard and head west to Highway 1. You can go on Highway 1 south of Pismo Beach but it shies away from the coast and is pretty slow with a lot of scenery you will have already seen. Back on Highway 1 in Oxnard you travel down through Ventura, Malibu, Huntington Beach, etc. until you hit San Juan Capitrano. Malibu is home to the Gidget and Beach Blanket Bingo type movies. It's California beaches with surfing, kite surfing, and girls rollerblading in a thong. At San Juan Capistano Highway One becomes Interstate 5 into San Diego. There is a Highway 1 beach route you can pick up again in Oceanside that takes you through San Diego beach towns.

Once in San Diego if you want to head to Vegas you can take I-15 right into the Las Vegas strip.

The coast route may be slow going at times but unless you are going through the Southern Cal beach towns on a weekend afternoon you will keep moving and once you've seen one Interstate you've seen them all.

The only time I go through L.A. on Interstate 5 is either at 10:00 P.M. on Friday night or Sunday before 11:00 A.M. That puts me between the dinner/party crowd and the drunks on Friday and before the hangover crowd on Sunday.

Hope you have a great trip.

Oh, Highway 1 just above San Francisco is pretty windy and slow. You can cut over Lucas valley Road and hit Highway 101 into San Francisco.

What is the camping situation all the way down 1 and 101. Will be looking for simple site but close to a location for food, BEER and shower at times as well..I know in Canada at times you have to go outa your way at times to find a place to set up a tent and often there will be nothing but fields for miles. I can see going maybe 1 day without givin the the body a scrub but would be nice to wake up outa the tent and find a location that is close for food and a shower.?

Seeing as I live in So Cal - Have taken the Coastal Route Many Many Times... Great Ride even in Aug... OIL COOLER (???) they work well but only when your moving and maybe reduce heat by 20 degrees... Vegas is Hot as He11 in Aug.. and traffic in and around Vegas is tough at times... Son's bike ('05 RK) even with cooler got HOT in traffic so we just found a nice Casino with a buffet and waited till dusk to continue... Ride early AM or Late PM there...

Most campgrounds get booked way in advance but a lot of beaches have fresh water showers. Cold water but not cold enough to avoid. You can check California State Parks online and see where campgrounds are on your route and then check availability. I know that Southern California Parks book a year or so in advance. You can also find cheap motels if you stay out of the popular areas.

What do you consider as cheap hotel..If cheap enough it means the tent stays home.

I live in the Central Coast area of Calif. PM me with specific questions.

You could do the Big Sur HWY then down to Morro Bay and HWY 41 to Yosemite then over Tioga pass and down 395 to Vegas.

$50.00-$70.00/night. A lot of motels aren't booked during the week so they're cheaper. I can handle Motel 6 with no shampoo and no hair dryer for $50.00/night. Clean enough to be healthy and cheap enough to make me happy! Booking online can cut the cost too. I paid $45.00 a night mid-week in Vegas last week at Motel 6 online.
