Default thoughts on audio set up

I’m planning on running 4) 6’’x9’’ Polk DB691 powered by Rockford Fosgate PBR 300x4 in bag lids, 2) 6.5’’ Polk DB651 powered by Rockford Fosgate PBR 300x2 in fairing. I have it priced out to about $1200 for all listed above and the bag lids with paint. Does not include the wiring. Also thinking of changing the head unit but haven’t found a good choice. Any input on this set up is welcome or recommendations for diff set up

Don't think you'll be happy with the PBR300x4 at all. Not a real power house and has a lot of heat issues. I would suggest the Soundstream pn4.520 in its place. I would stay with the PBR 300x2 it's a really good amp with no heat issues. 2010 Limited with some stuff

Here's my recommendation. I tried the polks this weekend and they were not what I expected and I am considering changing my whole setup to what is listed below. I was going to use the Rockford amp as well, but I have heard from 6 local buddies of mine who have road glides to avoid the rockford at all costs because it is notorious for overheating in that roadie fairing. Also, I wanted to do the bag lids as well, but being as tho my bike is the black denim color, it has been impossible to find anyone who will paint just lids because they always say the paint wont match (it's up to 5 different shops now saying that). Here is what I am leaning towards now...

1. JL Audio XD400/4 amp (about $250 if you get a refurbished one).
2. 2 pairs of Pioneer D6902R (About $80 a pair at Amazon)
3. Memphis Audio MC52 5.25 speakers (about $140 a pair).
4. J&M Rokker tweeters (about $120 a pair).
5. Rockford Fosgate 10 AWG amp install kit ($30 on Amazon).

So for about $620 in parts, this is what I plan to do...

Two each Pioneer 6x9 in the bags will take care of the low end thump. I plan to install the two 5.25 speakers on the inside of my Roadie fairing (on that part that faces the forks). This allows the speakers to produce sound that bounces off each other and into the riders face. I am putting the tweeters in place of two guages on the instrument cluster. Installation at my local stereo shop is $550 for everything.

I already have a J&M Rokker amp with the Rokker speakers installed on the Roadie already with two channels not being used. Those two channels will drive the 5.25 Memphis speakers and the Rokker tweeters that will be replacing the two guages. The JL Audio amp will power the four 6x9s in the bags (Im not using lids for the reason mentioned above). For the lost bag space, I just bought me a HD bag that I attach to my luggage rack. I am not a fan of the tour paks. They make the bike look so "old manish". So for about $1100 I will be adding 8 more speakers and a higher quality amp to my setup and that will complete the audio package. It should be done within the next week or so and I will try to find this thread and post my results.

Bottom line is that it doesnt take much to make a killer sound system, just a little patience, studying, and creativity. Hopefully this addresses your ideas and concerns and maybe gets you to open up to a little more possibility.

And remember this...you have a Road Glide. Your fairing treats sound, heat and amps totally different from the Batwing guys. Take that into consideration when building your system.

Key word is street glide. Roadies treat amps totally different. Reference my post above.

thanks for the info. what did you not like about the polk? it sounds like you will have a great setup. for me, i will be running the speakers in the lids so i need a marine grade speaker and from what i looked the pioneers are not. that was a reason i was looking at the polk. i also was debating the tweeters but do they really add that much to the system?? i was planning on ordering a bagger nation wire set up for eveything simply because it made for such easy install before. they also have a dual amp mounting set up avalible and speaker adaptors for the 6.5's i also didnt think about the shark vs bat fairing would make a diff on heat thanks for that clarification

Can't explain, but I know for fact that people in my area that run those Rockford amps in road glides ALWAYS end up replacing them because they burn up. Not so much on the batwings.

The polks just didnt have the bass I thought they would have. I am only wanting to use my 6x9 speakers for low end and maybe mids (trying to avoid having mids from them at all costs). Now if you are not after low end bass, then those polks were awesome plus the marine certification will work for you as well. The tweeters make a HUGE difference in regards to total sound output and being able to hear clear highs at speed. My bike is mostly a bar hopper with the occassional long trip to the mountains or something, but I feel I need the extra tweeters because my damn exhaust is so loud!. Either way, with a roadie, I suggest you stay away from that Rockford amp. And basically, follow everyone else's lead when it comes to this stereo stuff because it will save you a lot of time and a lot of money down the line if you let everyone else make the mistakes first.
