2012 front wheel on 2004
I picked up a 2012 wheel and tire, non-ABS with 25mm bearings.
I searched the forums looking for the best way to do this.
you can convert the late model to a 1" bearing setup.
Hogpro was a incredible resource for this and has all the parts needed to convert to a 1" setup on the 2012 wheel.Bearings, crush sleeve and such. Drew you are awesome and I thank you.
Or you can get a 25mm front axle and the non ABS spacers. This is a spendy way to go buying the axle from Mother Harley, thankfully a Forum member had one and it was 20 bucks to my door. This left spacers which were pretty cheap at dealer. 14 bucks for both.
Install was a breeze and was easy as pulling and installing the front wheel. I used the 2004 rotors of course.
There is a slightly different wheel install procedure from 2004. No more pulling the fork legs apart to butt up against the 7/16 drill bit. You push the forks together on the late model. torque on axle for late model was 10 pounds more I think, other values the same.
No rubbing, brake alignment issues or anything. Simple and satisfying. I love it.
The bike seems to handle slightly different, a little less stable at slow speed lock to lock tight turns and the ride is slightly stiffer from the shorter tire sidewall. It also feels to be more precise at speed and a little less forgiving of in turn steering input changes. Nothing significant and most will never notice.
Both the old front tire and new are Michelin Commanders, old with 8k new with 400 miles.
I say go for it. I think it looks better and now the hunt is on for a rear but first I will paint the existing one gloss black and see how that goes. For now I am happy happy happy.
Pics of before, now and way before.
