I pulled the rear wheel on my 2010 EG Limited and had a new tire mounted. Now on reinstall I think I have all the spacers but something don't feel right. I am looking at the service manual and I have everything it shows on the exploded axle diagram, but it dont show the swing arm either. What has me questioning things, is when pulling on the wrench to cam the wheel back tensioning the belt, I see the axle moving up and down about 1/8". Not forward and back like the length of the slot but up and down. Like the slot is too big / axle is too small a diameter. Is this normal? Am I missing a bushing / spacer that would fit in the swing arm slot taking up this room? Is it just made with that much "play". I know it wont move after tightening the axle nut but seems like it could be slightly out of alignment with that much play. Is this normal?
There is no bushing that goes in the slot. I haven't noticed whether there is any play up and down, but there has to be some. If it was a real tight fit you wouldn't be able to get the axel back through the cams, spacers, antilock brake sensor and wheel.
Be very mindful of the position of the antilock brake sensor when you go back together.
My 08 King has that play. I try to find the tight spot when setting the belt, then lower the jack enough to put weight on the wheel, loosen the axle nut enough to let the axle float to the top of the slot, then re-tighten enough to set belt tension. After that, I jack up the machine again and spin the wheel to verify belt tension through several full revolutions and then do final torque to specs. For all I know, the step for getting the axle against the top of the slot may be totally unnecessary but it makes me feel better. As I recall, the manual says nothing about that.
btsom,
That what I ended up doing. I stopped by and talked to a guy that used to be a Harley Mech. He said once it is torqued down it will not move and they never had a problem but yea it has a pretty good amount of slop. I just put some weight on the the wheel to push it to the top and torqued it to spec. Thanks for the help guys.
