Default Assemble 95" Big Bore

Just getting ready to assemble my 95" BB and was wondering what everyone is using for assembly lube and where to buy it. Also, when putting the piston in the cylinder do you just put the lube on the ring lands and piston skirt and leave the cylinder clean and dry? I have the manual but I just don't have it with me at the moment. Thanks in advance.

I use Amsoil assy lube, but on rings i use oil only. Don't want to chance any extra carbon on ring grooves. Mike

Others will have differing opinions, I'm sure, but I just went through this build myself and I'm waiting to get it on the road for a shakedown. I use dino oil (20w-50) in the ring lands before I put on my rings. This also puts the oil on the piston skirt, etc. I try to wipe it off the top of the piston before assembly but it's probably a moot point - just makes me feel better. After the jugs are honed I clean them very well (wipe multiple times with cleaner and clean rags until I see no evidence of grime), and then coat lightly with 20w-50.

I use assembly lube on all my internal (which are usually 'gear-related') parts during assembly (cams, pinion, bearings, lifters, etc.). You can buy assembly lube at any auto parts store and probably even WalMart.

Follow the manual closely and you shouldn't have any issues. I would also recommend double (and then triple) checking your ring spacing as you assemble. They have a way of 'walking' as you are positioning the jug on the piston, moving another ring into place, etc. The last thing you want is a smoking motor because the gaps on the rings magically aligned with one another during assembly.

Good luck!

You can get assembly lube in any auto parts store, just about...

I put it on any/all wear surface(s). Thin coat on the rings, on piston ring lands/grooves, and cylinder surface before installation. I try not to 'glob' it in the ring grooves. Top of piston gets no lube. Wrist pin surfaces get more than just a thin coat.

They also sell a break in oil additive you can use in your oil.

Camera 'at hand' is a must, we need pics of the install!
