Why does Harley do this stuff. Getting ready to put on the new Derby cover and the screws are T27 Torx!!! Of course that's not in my Torx Bit socket set. I tried Sears, Lowes, Home Depot, Advance Auto, NAPA, JC Whitney, Target, even K-Mart. A Google search didn't do me much good either. No T27. I refuse to buy another set to get the one bit I need. Last time it was the 1/4 inch 12 point socket!! Make it stop!!!!!!! [sm=insomnia.gif]
I had to buy a torx bit set. Once I got the screws out I quickly replaced them with the hex button screws. They work alot better and less chance of stripping the heads.
Torx fasteners were designed because of the problems stripping hex head fasteners. If the proper size tool is used.a torx fastener is next to impossible to strip.Note I said proper size Torx bit.
I got a set of 3. Didn't really need the other two, but that was the smallest set I could find to get the T27. I got them off eBay from someone called AZ Toolman. I recommend him. Got exactly what I ordered in two days.
What's a tamper proof torx? Where are they located on the bike?
ORIGINAL: EVOrider
Well it could be worse.....try using the standard torx on a tamper proof torx. I hate torx anyways...the person that invented the torx should be beat on the head for doing so.
I personally believe torx has no business on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
I believe the tamper proof torx is the one with the pin in the middle of the head. You have to get a set of torx with a hole in the middle to work with them. They are a real PITA but I have not run into any on my 98. I don't know about newer models.
I have a set of t handle torx, a set of 3/8" socket and a set of screwdriver type. I got them all from http://www.wihatools.com These are quality tools and they last. They have a great selection of other tools also. I have owned my T-27 t handle for about 6 years now and it is still in excelent shape.
These were recomended to me years ago by Hippofor those that know him. If there good enough for him there good enough for everyone.
