Does the "Record" function in the 2014 Nav system record a ride that has NOT been set up in ride planner? In other words if you checked "Record" and went on an unplanned route and really liked it, does the system save it for uploading to your PC to save?
I finally got a dry weekend here in Seattle to try out the 2014 nav Record function on my new SGS. The record function allows you to record your ride and export it to Garmin Base Camp or Ride Planner. If you are not going to plan a ride in Harley's Ride Planner and just want to record a ride that may turn out to be fun, try Record.
Here is how to get to Record:
Go to Nav
Select "Map"
Select the small menu icon right side of screen
Scroll down using the arrows on right side of screen to get to Record
Select "Record On"
Here is how to retrieve ride:
Go to Nav
Select "Where To"
Select "More"
Select "Trails"
Select "Show Route"
You will see a numbered route which you can rename for the ride
How to export ride:
Go to Nav
Select "Menu" in upper right screen
Put USB Thumbdrive in Jukebox (thumbdrive should have NO files on it)
You may get message that says "No Playable Media....." Select "OK"
Select "Export"
Select "USB" drive
Select named ride
Select USB icon on right side of screen
You will see "Exporting" and then click "OK"
I imported my ride into Garmin Base Camp and it looked good.
Once you record your ride, it will stay in the bikes memory. I don't know how may rides can be stored in memory. The recorded ride shows up as a non descript set of numbers. You need to rename it so that for subsequent rides you can ID it. I'll try to load it back into the system but I suspect that since the ride had already been stored on the bike that nothing will happen at the import.
Regarding waypoints none are indicated because the ride record function only records the ride from the point you start your ride and when you stop and turn off and lock the bike. When you start again and turn on the bike you need to set again the "Record On" function in NAV for the second leg to be recorded.
However I still need to do one more additional test on what terminates the recorded ride. On my initial test of record, I stopped once before ending the ride and turned off (kill switch on the bars) the bike but did not lock the forks, and the record function continued to record because that short stop did not show up on the plotted map. I'll report back on this to clarify....if it doesn't rain this weekend.
I bought a 2015 Ultra Limited and I'm very interested in the record and reload function.
I did a short ride tonight and even though the unit displayed it exported nothing was written to the USB drive. I'll try it again later with a totally empty drive as recommended here.
