Default Going International for a few years...

Hello everyone,

Im new here so bear with me, I own a 2014 Ultra Limited. i just got orders to go to japan for three years. there is a few mods that i know i will have to make. the first one is lighting i need to have at least one set of amber for the turn signals on the back. now the limited dosent have any bullet signals in the back just the tour pack lighting. i was looking at the plasma barsfrom custom dynamics but then it dawned on me that i dont know how to power them so that they ONLY work when the turn signal is on. as it stands right now the lights seem to be wired to a constant 12v line. hit the brakes the all light up turn signal ...welll you see what im getting at i dont want the ambers to fire off everytime i hit the brakes and dont want them to be constant running lights. any suggestions with out have to completely rewire things.... the next issue is the speedometer. i need to have one that is KPH. Stupid gages in the 2014 are flat on the bottom and harley only sell the kph model in the entire gage cluster variety $638.00. EF that so im looking at a handle bar mounted digital one. do yall think it will work? or is there some kind of something that would prevent that. the other less expensive option is to get one of those stickers and lop the bottom off flat? THOUGHTS GUYS? and yes i know its gonna cost like $3000.0 to register it there, but i guarentee with will be the only FLHTK Peace Officer edition in japan!!!

do a search, we have seen a couple of similar threads over the years, there are specialty shops in Japan which will help prepare the bike to their specs, and the names of those shops have been listed.
aside from lighting ( which shouldn't be difficult- all the wiring for the lighting in the tourpak comes from under the seat- a smart boy could find a place to tap in or start with the newly released detachable kit ), you may have to source spec emission gear including the active exhaust valving- I don't know about the 14, but the wiring is in place on 13 and earlier models for the active exhaust servo

prepare for a very expensive and onerous process, dealing with Japanese Officials can be tiring.

their culture does not allow them to "loose face".

denying a request is to "loose face"

so you will often be told "yes" , when the real unspoken answer is "no" or that "it is not possible".

should a Foreign Devil get mad...then the FD looses face...and they will just stop dealing with you at all.

I would really suggest that you think about selling your bike.
And look into buying one there after you see the roads and get a handle on your ability to switch to left hand side of the road ( right hand turns are tough, you gotta remember to go wide to teh outside lane, this seems to be most common mistake).

depending on your position, if you need apply for a Japanese license, motorcycle ratings are graduated.

check insurance too

and you will also need a set of E4 compliant mufflers.....if you are interested PM me...I have an extra set I can sell you....I bought two sets, one for a buddy of mine who then decided to store his bike.
Where are you PCSing to? I will be headed to Okinawa in a few months....already made contact with a guy over there that said for about $2K he can hook me up with everything needed to get registered. Remember to get your documents from Harley...brake certificate, manufacture docs, etc...you have to do a fax request and it takes about a month to get them.

I live in the UK and have seen what US owners have to do over here, to make their bikes legal. Are you getting advice on what changes you need to make, from a reliable official source? It's a bit easier over here, 'cos you all speak a vaguely similar lingo, but a bit more challenging for Japan I would guess!

I lived in japan for 7.5 years before, so I know what a pain they can be. I'm going to be heading out to sasebo in about 5 weeks. I do not want to sell the bike because I just
Bought it like 4 weeks ago... Before I knew I was going to japan.... Also I'm only going to be there for 3 years and most importantly its a peace officer edition and I'm almost positive they don't sell those in japan. I heard the price to be about 2800.00 and the dude will come flat bed it and work his magic. Far as taking it to a shop to let them mod it.... Hell no you think American mechanics can be shady imagine if they know you don't speak there language and know there laws... You will get a halogen fluid Chang pay for it and not even know it!!! I already have a hapanese drivers license too
