My 88 has 40k on her, decided to get a motor kit, thinking on the 98 kit and need to k.ow what cams would work best? And any other advice towards what to go with in general...appreciate any advice.
This is a big subject! Any tuning shop that provides a big bore kit should also be able to advise on a matching cam and head work. My advice is either contact one of the HDF sponsors or look up a local shop. You will get good results with a proven tuning package from a reputable shop. Hillside and FM are both HDF sponsors, but there may be more.
I tried several different cam sets in different engines. Some give power early, some middle and some late.Consult a reputable shop (as previously stated) and tell them how you want to ride. They should be able to help you with the whole build plan. You can call Bobby Wood at Wood performance. He is the "wizard" in my opinion. http://www.woodcarbs.com/cams.htm. Good luck!
Where do you spend most of your time in the RPM range? I rarely exceed 4K so I picked a cam that comes on early but is done by 4800. I personally don't know anyone that runs a cam that goes to 5500 or more. It's all about the combo, don't over cam.
As stated, decide your riding style and RPM range, lots of cams out there that do similar things. If your like most you will want a cam that has lots of low end and mid range. Important thing is to match c/r to the cam you pick. Get some mild head work done and you will like it. A 98" with a cam like an Andrews 26, c/r at 9.6, a good tune and should impress you.
I would say bottom end mid for cam, and what does get some head work consist of?
There are several variables when upgrading an engine. In addition to more cubic inches a change of CR and cam are quite obvious, but some combinations will give of their best with reworked heads, meaning reprofiled or enlarged ports, even bigger valves. We have access to some of the old and trusty cam profiles that have been around since Evo days, but there are also recent designs that can give truly impressive performance improvements.
Now we have got you on the hook, it really is worth phoning someone like Hillside, to get the lowdown on the choices available to you! There is no substitute for learning from the experts! We're just customers in here, like you may be soon......
