I had been kicking tires in my local dealership for the last couple of weeks. I have a perfectly fine 2002 Goldwing that I enjoy riding, but the bike itself doesn't excite me. I'm turning 40 in a few months and my wife gave me the OK to buy a Harley as a gift from her. We immediately fell in love with the CVO, but the idea of spending that kind of money on a bike was sickening to me.
Last Saturday I made up my mind and we headed to the dealership to buy an Ultra Limited. I told the dealer we'd take it and we were walking back to his desk. Along the way, my wife and another employee started commenting on how nice the CVO was. Long story short, we left that evening having purchased the CVO.
It's a ridiculous amount of money, but life is short. We are fortunate to have the means, and my wife felt I'd regret not getting the CVO down the road. All the new Harley's are nice, but the CVO really stands out. I'm loving the bike and plan on keeping it for quite some time.
I love the look of the CVO's and don't know why harley doesn't change the Glides to look like it. Ok the engine isn't the same but why not look like it with cool stuff. it wouldn't cost any more when selling in mass.
I know if I bought a CVO i would still strip it down and spend 10k on it to personalise it.
Thats right. When I bought my 09 SE Ultra in 11-11, it was on the showroom floor for $38,900 with 9700mi. He had all the paperwork of all oil changes, maintaince records, even tire pressure checks!!! And his bill of sale in 11-08 was $43,890 out the door.
Stopped by local dealer this weekend, Quaid H-D in Temecula, CA., right by the front door they had a CVO Limited priced at $42, 400 ! Now I know that we all overspend on our Harleys but $42K ? Jesus H Christ, if that's not an example of how ridiculous H-D has gotten with their prices I don't know what is ! Ironically, I was car shopping recently and looked at some brand new Lexus models the IS-250/350 and ES-350. All can be had for less than the CVO Limited. I understand supply and demand but HD is taking it's customers for one hell of a ride !
What it sounds like is typical California greed. . . . . .

Wow!
And to think when I purchased my 13 SG and the bottom line was 23k I felt like I needed to go get my head examined for spending that. I almost walked out and said f_ck this!! Its and shiny engine based on 1920's technology on a frame.
The only saving grace for me is I keep my bikes for 10+ years minimum and I LOVE to ride.
In reading this thread from front to back I noticed really only one or two people that hit nail on the head. Those that buy the CVO ultra and spend the going rate, which is set depending on locale, really don't give a **** what the cost is. They can afford it. As in anything there are the exceptions where a few are owned by people of above average income who can afford it but really know they are paying a premium price. Most are owned by those that really don't feel the purchase at all. Same is true for 2014 vette buyers which are going for north of $75000.
I recently picked up a 2010 Softail Convertible with low miles for $22K (out the door) so I don't feel too violated like I might have if I bought this new for around $30K..! These darn CVO's are really nice and I'm glad I could afford it. I always wanted one.
When Jap bike riders see a Harley, they wish they had one. When Harley riders see a CVO, they wish they had one. lol I would love to have one, but I'm very happy with what I have.

I stopped by Glendale HD - they had the same bike, thru on a couple extra chrome pieces and wanted $48,000.00.
Harley's have always been overpriced....but that's the cost of getting into the club.
Exactly !! It all depends on what level you want in on. Like many other that have commented, it was a gradual process for me to be able to afford a brand new '12 Road Glide.
