We've already done that - which is why we wear ear plugs. If you don't wear them at speed, there will come a time when you have greatly reduced hearing, anywhere.

If "environmental road noise" on a parkway or lighter interstate when not too crowded is 90dcbls., then wearing the 30dcbl. plugs (even those foamy ones from CVS or Walgreens) drops the noise to your ear to ~ 60dcbls., and you can STILL hear the deeper sounds of the cars approaching. What you lose is just that high-pitched "hiss / swoosh" wind noise, even with a full-face helmet.
When I ride WITH them, I'm amazed at how much longer and peacefully I ride before the fatigue factor sets in. Almost doubles my ride time before a "tired break." :-)
