Stage 1 is usually different exhaust, either complete or just slipons, and better air cleaner. Usually it will have a tuner as well, but can be argued that a tuner is not necessary.

There is almost always a "Stage 1" thread...here's one:

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...stage-one.html

since your bike is new to you, it may already have a stage one, if the air cleaner has the stock 'football" cover sealed to a plastic backing plate, yours is stock. if the back of the football cover is open, then you are set.

and some kind of tuning compensation has already been done for you.

Poor man's stage one for a bike with cats.
Remove cat.
Upgrade air filter
Plug in VIED fuel enhancer.

Cost 3-500 (used/new)
Bike will be faster, cooler, smoother.

Easy to go back to stock.

Hi Ken and welcome to HDF from the UK. We have a dedicated forum to the 'Rushmore' 2014 bikes, where you should find info on that. Just go to the top of this Touring forum index - for Platform 9 3/4!

Easy to go back to 'almost' stock - kinda tough to put the cat back.

Mike

What I've learned is the combination of different exhaust and "unrestricted" air cleaner requires some type of fuel managements system. Last summer when I purchased my new Street Glide the dealer told me I could change the exhaust (slip-ons) and not change anything else...but as soon as I put on the Heavy Breather (in addition to the slips-ons) I had to add a fuel monitoring system. Hope that helps

A stage I lets more air pass throw the engine that is other wise is stock, your engine is just
an air pump. More air in and more air out makes more horse power, by using a less restrictive
air cleaner and exhaust system. That requires better fueling and timing to run at the engines
best. The money spent on a stage I is more then likely the best bang for the Money.
