May have been his way of admitting it happened there with out actually saying so to get the moco to replace it for you on there dime.
Bottom line is they took care of you and in the end that's what matters.

Back in 1991 I took delivery of a Candy Sapphire FXSTC. The day I went to pick it up the dealer told me that there was a scratch on it and they showed me where. It was less than 1/4 inch and barely under the fender struts so I doubt I would have ever seen it. They had already ordered the replacement bobtail fender and in a few weeks they called me and it was installed.
