Cheap 20/50 in motor sportrans in primary. Change it every 3000km's so I go penzoil usually at $3.00/ lt. If I wanted longer oil change intervals I would think about synthetic but for me it's a waste of money...Mark...

Royal Purple, all three, runs fine, change every 5K. Seems to me that changing synthetic more frequently than 5K is unnecessary. However, I was concerned about using it intransmission. Royal Purple people tell me 20W50 has same viscosity as gear oil and meets all mfgr's requirements. If this is the case, why use different products?

I have an '07 Electraglide Standard. At the 1,000 mile service I asked the service manager if I could go ahead and go synthetic and he said they are recommending not to go synthetic until the 5,000 mile service. He said they've already had one guy who brought his'07 into the shopafter he changed to synthetic at the 1,000 mile service and it was leaking through the valve seals. The head mechanic and service manager said these '07 bikes need longer for everything to seal and shouldn't go to synthetic until the 5,000 mile service. Hmmm...don't know if this is true or not with all '07's, but I'm wanting to go with Amsoil, Mobile 1 or Redline at 5,000 miles. Has anyone else with an '07 had any problems after going synthetic at the 1,000 mile service or anytime thereafter? Your advice and experience is very much appreciated!

These service managers that tell customers things like that should be fired. If you look at the top of the line screaming eagle bikes as well as the top cars like porsche, corvette to name a few are shipped with synthetic oil in them. Where's the problem there with breakin? I would say that the oil leaking through the seals (if it was) was due to deffective parts and not the oil as he claims.

Amsoil all three holes here. It's the best, Goggle it and you will see for your self.
Please define "best" for us. If we Google, we're sure to find the famous "White Paper" posted on numerous Amsoil sites that is the independent test commissioned, designed, and paid-for by Amsoil. Alas, this will likely be the only test encountered. The truth is that Amsoil is a top-drawer product, among others on the market, but is not "best" in all categories and under all conditions. Reference Motorcycle Consumer News, American Iron, and Quick Throttle magazines--all of which have published truly independent tests on motor oils. The QT article was posted on this forum in an earlier thread (https://www.hdforums.com/m_1379162/mpage_2/tm.htm).

I hope and pray there will come a day when "best" isn't used so liberally and categorically in these oil threads, but I fear it is a dream.

For the OP, here's a suggestion: Select from the usual suspects (Mobil 1, Amsoil, Royal Purple, Redline, et al) based on availability and price. Synthetic oil is best for the engine. For most, the "best" using these criteria would be Mobil 1 15w50, available at Walmart for about $5/qt. I prefer it over the VT variant because of price and the fact that it contains moly as an additive, which is an important but expensive anti-friction additive that is absent in many oils, including Amsoil and M1 VT. In both MCN and AI oil tests, moly was touted as a very important additive in motor oil. As suggested in the QT article mentioned earlier, warnings about using oils containing moly in wet-clutch applications may not cause problems as has been widely rumored. In HD Big Twin engines, engine oil is separated from the clutch package and this is not a concern. Don't believe statements on some Amsoil sites that Cummins has "banned" moly in oils recommended for their diesels because of "excessive valvetrain wear." I called Cummins and was told this was not true, and no such "ban" or other warning has been issued by Cummins.

That "White Paper" test, was forwarded to each oil company before and after the results were known. ANY company that did a test like this certainly would be SUED hand over fist by any company that could prove the tests were faked in any way shape or form. The fact that not one of them has said "BOO-HOO" about this test should tell everyone a little.
Yep, AMSOIL paid for the oils and the lab time, no doubt there. To say they bought off all the oil company lawyers and marketing heads is just insane. In this day and age of lawsuit happy people, and just one of those tests were to be faked, AMSOIL would no longer be in business.

I agree, they don't know their butt from a hole in the ground. Go back and ask them why the SE bikes come with synthetic and they don't leak??? Take a picture of their face when you catch them on that one.
Fact is, many vehicles come off the line with full synthetics and more will follow in the future. If synthetics were that slippery, the engine would never warm up and no one would be complaining about the heat under the seat

Here's a question for the " amsoil experts" that claim amsoil to be the best and as stated above. The famous white pages they produce at their expense to promote their product. Has anyone ever seen people trying to promote another brand oil like the dealers on this and other sites like amsoil does? It's the old pyramid system at work again, the old amway system. I sell to you and you sell to the next guy and I make a proifit on your purchase and also on your sales too. Not hard to get caught up in the amsoil scheme when you want to make some money![/align]
