Default Security Question

Okay I am fairly new to the Harley scene..about a year into it.....I have the service manual, read my owners manual and think I am somewhat knowledgeable about my 2012 RKC..... I do all my own wrenching and I am confident and capable of major motor work and such....
So here is my dilemma....I was washing my bike and had my FOB in the garage...about 20 feet away....no problem...dry it off, decide what the hell it's a nice day...fire up and go for a quick putt around to blow off any excess H2O....
However....I left my keys and FOB in the garage....went about 20 miles round trip without them....should that be possible? Without the FOB should it have stopped? Should I be looking at my security settings? I have installed the alarm, and I am pretty certain that I checked all my settings....but this got me thinking about it all.
I don't know if I had shut her off if it would not have started.....I did not even realize it until I rolled back into my garage and saw my keys on my tool cart...
Anyone ever done this? Any suggestions? Ideas?

Yes!

Made that mistake myself one time but I shut the bike off on my trip and when I went to re-start the bike the security kicked in.
In other words, as long as the FOB is near the bike it will start and you can ride away, if you turn it off and don't have your FOB handy you are SOL.

It's a shitty design.

Don't do that again

And that's one of the reasons to know how to do a security override.

You aren't SOL if you shut it off. Take 5 minutes and learn how to use the manual override. It really takes a minimal amount of planning to avoid such issues.

Yes, it is possible to ride without the FOB.
The FOB was close enough when you started the bike. The engine will not die when you get farther away.

But if you would have shut the engine down on your trip, you wouldn't have been able to start the engine again without using the security over ride code.

Be sure and learn how to do that, before you end up stranded one day.

Yeah, it's a crappy design. How hard would it be to program in some indication (fast flashing key, solid key) that you've ridden out of range of the fob? That said. learn your 5 digit code and how to use it.

There is a wallet sized card in your owners manual that you can write you personal security code on. It also gives you all the procedures on how to put the PIN in your bike if your key fob should fail or get lost on the road. I always carry that card in my wallet.
