I'm curious too it has no warning label or any thing , I've mine for about 1500 miles yes it does take some juice to fire up the light and when starting the bike light goes pretty dim for a split second.I always have my bike on the tender used to when ignition switch turned on with stock lights tender stayed sleep but with HID tender gets to work immediately.
I STRONGLY recommend you get a harness with a delay relay!
I just went through this a few months ago and no matter how I ran it, (Through Stock lighting or standard relay with hot straight to battery)every now and then the HID would shut off on engine start up. Especially, when the engine is cold. The starter just draws to much current and it starves your ballast.
After installing the delay relay it fires off EVERY time. Once you turn on ignition there is a 10-15 second delay before ballast fires off. Works perfectly!
It also prolongs the life of the ballast. Ballasts don't like having the current cut out while running.
I would go with either 5000 or 4300k. Nothing higher.
I went with 5k 35watt bulbs in the Dual Halogen Reflector. It's ridiculously bright, day or night!
Good luck!
Thanks for the recommendations. Where did you get the harness with a delay relay? Why do you recommend 5000 or 4300?
I'm the OP. Can anyone with a long time on plug n play on TRUHIDS with no mods (relays, etc) let me know about the long term reliability please. Thanks!
Looking at these as well. Not sure I trust/like the HID though. Curious about reliability. Hope someone answers your question about long term use.
May consider the Trucklite TL7 for headlight and the LED bulb only replacement that SoCalmotogear.com offers for the passing lamps at about $60.00 pair.
Any thoughts on that set up?
Since you are only getting it for day time use just get a single beam 35W. I run that on my bike (there is no bright) and they are much less expensive and work great. You are seen much better in the day time as well. I run the 6000k version and people regularly move out of my way (in the day time) and see where with stock lighting they did not.
It was $32 for two HID's on ebay. I'd recommend it to anyone.
The fairing switches aren't meant to carry operating current, just very low current to operate a relay. Same as any car.
I've had HIDs in the past in my passing lamps with bad experiences including but not limited to the passing lamps going out together and taking the headlight with them in the black of the night of the Smokey Mountains. Keep fuses handy with a strong flashlight.
On the other hand, they seem to work for others.
Your results may vary. Past performance cannot predict future results.
I will be installing the TruHids kit in my '13 SG next week. Considered the TL 7 (LED) but didn't like the way it stuck out once installed (requires a Frenched or Hooded accessory chrome trim to even look close imho). Planning on trying the plug n play install, no relays or delays. Emailed SoCalMotogear and they responded quickly. They report that they have higher quality ballast that requires less amp draw on start up and should hold up over time.
I also ordered the Custom Dynamics Ringz and will report back on the combination of lights and how they look together.

As well I'm planning on the plug and play with no mods myself to begin with. I have the CD 'Dynamic Ringz' with the white outer DRL and the inner amber turns. My halogen SilverStar Ultra looks yellow next to the DRL's. I ordered an extra bulb with the kit to take on road trips. I also never ride at night.
I've used HID's on my last 3 bikes. On my first one, mine would not ignite sometimes at startup. They make an inline capacitor that plugs in between the power and ground wire just for getting the extra boost you need at startup. Any HID retailer should have one. No wiring, just plug and play.
