I used a small button head machine screw that's just the right size (I don't remember the exact size...).
It's been a few years since the repair and working just fine as it's supposed to.

A thumbtack and epoxy worked for me.

HD switch for $60.00 or Drag Specialties for $16.00. I went with the DS and it works just fine. You'd better have small fingers though to install it!! Ask me how I know!! LOL!!

A few good ideas here for me to try today. The set screw or self tapping screw seems most viable at this point. I have read about teh thumbtack option but cant visualize that yet. Plastic or metal version? I also read of someone cutting the head off of an 8D nail and epoxying that in as well. I have a clean hole down the center to work with right now so I am think I get one shot at this.

Thank you all.

+1 for the small screw fix. Found a random philips in the junk drawer that seemed to fit perfectly... Been in for over a year without issue.
Beats spending $60 on a new switch, though $16 for the DS sounds reasonable enough.

Go to your local hardware if you don't have anything to work with and pick up the set screw. Use some 2 part epoxy or a good super glue.

Well. I believe that we have met not with just acceptable but exceptional results this afternoon. I was all over the set screw option but looked through all the options I had on hand already first. So after assembling an assortment of various sized candidates off to the garage. The pics will show that the winner was a small sheet metal style screw. Threaded I nicely without being destructive to the delicate remains I had to work with. The head presents just enough height and it works perfectly. I decided to secure the screw with some black RTV which serves double duty as a sealant as well. Very pleased right now. Thanks all.

thats what i did. small hole, small screw, and the round head presses in the switch enough to turn the lights off, and set the cruise.

well, that was certainly different. i've never seen anyone do the 'mod' to the switch side, always to the lever itself. but if it works for you, good news.
