In summer from central CA to PHX Arizona only way to ride little comfortably is night time specially coming back to CA but still pretty warm until 50 miles away from PHX. My 2 grand kids birthdays are in summer I leave home about 1 am to get there before it feels like an oven. Not whole lot wild life except couple passes.
I ride at night. Have seen 2 groups of deer while riding, but imagine there are more I don't see. Around here, they plant corn right up to the road. If a deer pops out of that, it won't matter if its day or night.
When at a bar, I get a kick of watching it empty out so all can get home before dark. I think its so they don't have to wash the bugs off their face and bike.
In central WI, I avoid night riding. Last fall, I broke my rule and rode at night. Three deer ran in front of me, and even though I was riding 5 under speed limit, I just missed the 3rd. Too high of a pucker factor.
Have ridden in all hours, day and night, twilight at both ends, deer do not care what time of day it is to run, have almost hit them at noon hour yet see many more at twilight than at late night. All taken to account, slowing down, looking for the tell tale golden glow or the flash of a dark shadow moving faster than the headlight shadows is key, knowing the typical show out spots, ditches, small groves of brush, etc. does help but main thing is to SLOW DOWN prior to getting into the critters domain.
Deer, Moose, Bear and all kinds of other critters all over the roads and not only at night. I'm cautious and I've had my share of critter encounters, raccoons, skunk, turkey over the years. However, our season is short and my bike is it for me while the time is here. Cautious, but don't live in fear every ride. I just enjoy riding way too much. If its my time its my time.
Deer, yes always a thought. But secondary here. I'm more alert of the new teen drivers hauling *** down these narrow side roads,as well as the occasional drunk or geeked up driver.
