I have seen the # differences on the dyno sheets with a 96", which is what I have in my 2011 EGC that today has a PC-V, Big Sucker and Dragula 2:1 pipe. My question is the $500 worth the extra 10HP(ish)? I put about 20-25K on each year with plenty of stop/go traffic around the Baltimore, DC and VA beltways going to and from customer meetings throughout summer as well. I typically (90%) live in the 2500-4K RPM threshold with my riding style, ride solo and take longer 4-6 day trips a few times a summer going up into Maine, Canada or down into NC with plans going into MO, CO and WY this year.
I know this is all very subjective from a performance perspective and those that like the HP/Torque but how about reliability and heat in stop/go traffic? What I would like to get out of the build is more power in my riding style and overall just not happy with what I have today with my stage 1.
Yup that's about the cheapest 10 hp or so you'll ever buy for one of these lol.
Then you you can save up for some ported heads that difference becomes even greater.
Have done two builds on stock bores now and kick myself every time I fire this one up. Bought pistons etc anyways, why not just get the bigger jugs to go bigger..
No comparision. You absolutely want the 107. Besides the 11 ci increase in displacement, you also get the increase in compression with the pistons. The compression increase is what really helps the cams out.
You won't be disappointed with the FM107 kit and TW-555 cams.
If we are analyzing dollars to HP we should not be in an HD forum. Plenty of other manufactures beat that with a stock bike.
Do whatever makes you happy and brings you enjoyment for the $ is the way I look at it.
The question is NOT about $ to HP but the $/HP compared to longevity and reliability increasing that displacement from 96 to 107" given the higher compression ratio and CI. Sorry, if that did not come across properly in my post. I am perfectly fine spending another $500 in a engine build as long as I do not lose riding my bike all over and sit in this awesome east coast traffic for hours on end in bumper to bumper traffic in July to gain that 10 HP.
If you are not happy with your 96 stage 1, bumping it up is completely worth it! Reliability may become a concern with 107 thin spigots?? But I haven't actually seen any failures??? If ya are worried about it go 103. Heat is more about the tune than anything else. I would recommend ditching your PCV, going to a flash tuner and reconnecting the o2s. Select a good midrange cam like Andrews 57 or Woods 555 and get the ccp between 195/205. Mild headwork is a big plus too. Whatever ya do, get it tuned properly! Good luck!
If that ride on 95 North between Virginia and Washington that I had yesterday was any indication on what the summer will bring, no matter what you decide on on, you better get the Wards Fans to cool those heads down while your in the 2 hour stop and go traffic!!!!!
