Default Progressive 412's std vs HD vs changing shock oil

Ok, so this forum is about to cost me more $ again. Looking into some sort of ECONOMICAL shock upgrade, LOL. Can't bring myself to put out big bucks on my 8 year old bike (so no ohlins or 944's)

Just wondering how much of an improvement comes from the 412's, and how to gauge if standard or heavy duty springs are required.

I am 6' and weigh in at 240, and ride 1 up 99% of the time.

I am also wondering if changing the stock shock oil will give me the same results as a 412 switch.

I replaced the oil in my 12" shocks with amsoil 10w. huge difference in the way it rides and only cost 20 bucks. very easy to do. that's where I would start. in 6'4" and weigh in at 400. ride 1 up most of the time haven't had the ol' lady on yet with the oil change

Upgrade the oil first with a good 10w before you try any expensive upgrade. SJ Ron

I'm 220lbs, ride solo 95% of the time and got the 12.5" 412s with standard springs. I'm riding at the #3 setting out of 5 and if I load up the bike with gear will need to be at #4 for sure. If you are 240lbs I would go with the heavy duty springs because if you go with standard you are already going to be pretty much maxed out when you are solo. I haven't ridden 2up yet but I know I'm going to be on the bubble of bottoming. 412s are a good upgrade for not a lot of money but I can't comment on the other options only vs stock setup.

Agree with the others. Change the oil first. Cheap and if you like it, win!
