Default Sert Usage Question

Why can't you use the SERT on more than one bike?

Isn't it just a computer connection that downloads maps to the ECM?

I was puzzled when the dealer I have my bike dyno'ed at ask to keep my SERT at their shop.

Why would he ask that? If was as if he planned to use it on other bikes.

Is there some secret that's been kept regarding these SERT?

Can one really use them over and over again? Like charging customers for buying one and then using the sameone over and over again?

Thanks.

The SERT registers it self to your electronic vin number the first time you hook it up, this stops it from ever being used on another ECM but the one that matches that vin number. Think of your vin being the password, if you tried to use the SERT connector on a different bike it would not work. Dealers often want to keep your sert key when you have one installed and some also keep the cd with the canned maps and software it comes with. Not sure why, except it keeps you coming to them for adjustments, or if you sell it, the next buyer will have to buy another one if he wants changes. Bottom line, you paid for it, demand they give you all the stuff, then you decide who tunes it next time, or you can use it as a extra if you sell the bike by passing it on to the new buyer.

Just a FYI, all SERTs can be re-married or matched to another bike. The gotcha (I believe) is that a dealer has to do the matching. If you sell your current ride, you can keep the SERT and have the dealer match it to the new one.

First this is untrue, the reason is A SERT is not a tangable object, it consists of a small piece of hardware that only lets you access the tuning section of your stock ECM. Once this key, detects your vin # its a done deal. Ask any dealer, or read hundreds of threads on here over the years about the SERT and read for yourself. A PC III or other add on device can be used on other like bikes but SERT is a one bike item.

I'm just going to repeat what GR said. I'm not sure where you got your info from rkbikeman but this is not possible. A vin is required much the same as a password on a puterand is then specific to that unit and cannot be reused on another bike weather you own it or not. I called Harley and asked.

My dealer sold a new bike that had been upgraded and tuned and the buyer didn't want it. They had to swap ecm's with a stock bike because the sert couldn't be removed.

Sorry, I have been re-educated from what a dealer had told me. Amazing how much knowledge is available in this forum.

FYI, the interface (black box) that comes with the SERT contains a one time programmable EPROM (OTP).You can basically use the SERT on any bike to scan codes, get ECM info, do Data Recordings. The moment you upload a map to the ECM it reads the VIN and writes it to the OTP EPROM; and that locks it to that bike/VIN.Programming that same bike again requires the software to do a VIN match via the EPROM, and if successful, all goes as planned. If not, the software stops programming witha warningthe SERT is locked to another VIN....etc....etc............

gunrunner is right on the money!
